Top 3 Golf Grip Tips – To Improve Performance and Help Fix Common Faults

Top 3 Golf Grip Tips – To Improve Performance and Help Fix Common Faults

One of the most important elements of your set-up is how you hold the golf club – the grip.

Get the grip right and you are well on your way to playing some great golf shots. We are all looking to improve our game every time we go out onto the course, whether it`s trying to get more distance off the tee, eliminating a slice, or ridding ourselves of the dreaded snap-hook.

Here are my top three golf grip tips to make fine adjustments to help with the most common problems.

Grip the club lightly for more club head speed

Club head speed has a direct significance on the distance we gain. To achieve the greatest club head speed, you need to grip the club as lightly as possible , without it flying from your hands! This is why we wear a glove – to enable us to grip lightly on the club, yet still retain control of it. On a scale of 1-10, if 10 were the tightest you could grip the club, we are looking at maybe 2-3 for a light grip

Use a weaker grip to help prevent hook shots

If your ball is curving to the left, this is known as a hook shot. You need to move your hands around the clubs` grip to the left (anti-clockwise), this is known as a weak grip. Make these adjustments in small increments until you get the desired effect. If you have your grip as weak as possible, and you are still hooking, try this;- grip the club more tightly, on our 1-10 scale try 4-5. Gripping the club tightly makes your arms swing slightly slower and the club head will take longer to release – in normal circumstances this would encourage a slice, but it should fix your hook.

Use a stronger grip to help prevent a slice

If your ball is curving to the right, this is known as a slice. You need to move your hands around the clubs` grip to the right (clockwise), this is known as a strong grip. Again, make these adjustments in small increments until you get the desired effect. If you have your grip as strong as possible, and you are still slicing, then you need to grip the club as lightly as possible, 1-2 on our scale.

This will let your arms swing quicker, the club head will release faster and, in effect, encourage a hook – which should straighten-up your slice.

I hope that you found these golf grip tips useful and informative, and that they go some way to helping your golf game.

Enjoy your golf.

What are the different types of golf shots?

What are the different types of golf shots?

Though it sometimes seems that there are dozens of different golf shots that a golfer must learn to be a “good golfer” (e.g., consistently shoot in the 70’s or 80’s), there really are only a critical few golf shots that matter outside of the putting game.  If golfers can master these critical golf shots which can be applied and adapted for just about any golf situation, then they will certainly see a drop in their scores and more consistency in their game.  Below is a listing and description of each of these golf shots and how they are applied around the golf course.

1.Straight Golf Shots: As the name implies, a straight golf shot starts straight and holds the line toward the target.  It is used when the target is straight in front of you and shaping the golf shot right or left is unnecessary.  A straight golf shot is achieved when all the golf fundamentals are executed and synchronized effectively including setup position, grip, swing path and weight transfer.

2.Draw Golf Shots: A draw golf shot is used to curve a shot right to left around an obstacle to the target. The basic fundamentals of straight golf shots are followed, except alignment is right of the target and the grip is rotated in a “stronger” position to encourage right to left ball flight.

3.Fade Golf Shots: A fade golf shot is used to curve a shot left to right around an obstacle to the target. Similar to a draw, the basic fundamentals of straight golf shots are followed, except alignment is left of the target and the grip is rotated in a “weaker” position to encourage left to right ball flight.

4.Fairway Bunker Golf Shots: A fairway bunker golf shot is hit from fairway bunkers adjacent to the fairway. A good fairway bunker shot can position you well for your next shot and help save your score.  On these shots, it is important to position the body so that ball lies in the middle of your stance and stand “taller” throughout the shot to strike the ball cleanly.

5.Greenside Bunker Golf Shots: A greenside bunker golf shot is hit from bunker adjacent or very close to the putting surface. Since loft, rather than distance, is more important on these golf shots, it is important to position the ball forward in the stance while weight is distributed (and kept) favoring the left side throughout the golf shot.

6.Pitch Golf Shots: Pitch golf shot spends more time in the air than on ground and are typically used when 60 yards or more from the putting green.  The setup and weight distribution used for pitch shots are different than for straight, draw and fade golf shots and a lofted club such as a sand wedge or lob wedge is used.

7.Chip Golf Shots: Chip golf shots are typically used when the golf ball is 3 to 6 feet off the green and putting the ball is not a good option.  Chip shots are miniature versions of the full swing where just enough power is applied to land the ball quickly on the surface and roll toward the cup.

Of course, there are several other types of golf shots, but most are just variations of the ones above.  If golfers can focus on mastering these golf shots, then their games are sure to quickly improve.

Choose perfect golf training aids to lower your golf score. Golf tips and golf fixes available in Golf Genie’s golf pocket guide.

My Golfing Life As A Hooker!

My Golfing Life As A Hooker!

Article by David Lee

This is a warning to all wannabe golfer’s,go down this path with your golf game i can guarantee you will live a life of pain and anguish, sorry i don’t mean to start on a negative note but the fact is it’s true.

Basically throughout my golfing career i have been a hooker, how or more importantly why it started i can’t explain. It certainly wasn’t intentional. When i first started hooking it was by no means every shot, the honest truth was that it just crept up on me,over days, weeks, and even months, the problem being it just gets worse to the point that almost every shot hangs towards the left, and not just a tiny bit either,oh no we are talking 90 degrees to the left my golf shots were making a circle look tame.

I spent a majority of my days in trees searching for lost balls,my friends didn’t want to play golf with me(i didn’t blame them to be honest)I can remember this day so clearly, the dreaded day i discovered i ran out of golf balls only during a round i hasten to add!.Talk about embarrassing.

I decided that i was long overdue in receiving professional help,i walked off the course that afternoon, and spoke to the pro in the clubhouse. He advised me that he had already heard about my problem, mmnn my so called friends had talked to him the previous day to find out if it was infectious of all things!.

However i began to cheer up after talking to the pro because there is a cure.Keap reading and i will elaborate

THE PROBLEM:

Hitting the ball with a closed clubface, causing shots to curve (sometimes dramatically) to the left.

THE CURE:

Ascertain your own grip, when gripping the club the Vs in each hand need to point over your right shoulder,if they are pointing further to the right your grip is way too strong, this will cause a closed face which will cause a ‘hook’ at impact-when your hands come back to their normal position.

You may find that your grip is good but you are still hooking,if this is you then weaken your grip by gradually moving both hands to the left.Your stance is very important so make certain your feet, knees, hips and shoulders are all parallel to your target line.

Another major cause of ‘hooking’ is the position of the ball itself having it too far back can produce an excessive in-to-out swingpath,to rectify this grip the club more in the palm of your hand, rather than your fingers, this will reduce the action in your wrists and premature closing of the clubface.

Always make sure that your left wrist joint isn’t to loosened up at the moment of impact,if this is the case your right wrist will take charge and consequently the clubface will close too early.Onto your downswing now,the action should always begin with your legs and body. This stops your wrists unhinging and closing the clubface too soon.

Can you see that this problem is curable folks?Well ok maybe not TOTALLY curable, after many years it still happens to me on occasions. But at least i don’t have to spend my golfing days stuck up a tree looking for lost balls,i am quite happy with my new title-The Happy Occasional Hooker!.

Iron Golf Swing – How To Master Your Iron Play

Iron Golf Swing – How To Master Your Iron Play

Article by John Lynch

The Masters at Augusta National puts a huge necessity on the iron game more than any other major golf tournament. Here’s how to build an iron golf swing by copying what the pros do at Augusta!

The lightening fast greens and mind bending slopes of Augusta National put so much emphasis on quality iron golf shots that even the most seasoned pros can get rattled (see Greg Norman). The most demanding aspect about August National is the absence of flat lies, with it’s sloping landscape and bikini waxed greens, you will encounter one of the most challenging tests of iron play on the planet!

To help you master your iron golf swing and thus improve your enjoyment of this great game of golf, let us go through some of Augusta National’s toughest iron shots and explain how to execute them properly. If you already strike your iron shots perfectly every time, then use these tips on solid iron play as a course guide while you watch the Masters on TV. But if you’re like the widespread majority of golfers, you probably battle with many of the risky shots the pros see at the Masters. If this is you, read on…

With the right kind of practice along with a good fundamental understanding of what constitutes a solid iron game, you CAN build a great iron game just like the pros!

Draw On #16 The 16th hole at Augusta is often the deciding factor on who will win the Masters. Perhaps the most dramatic moment ever on the 16th hole at Augusta is of Jack Nicklaus hitting a pure iron shot he nearly holed out on his way to his sixth Masters victory in 1986. What makes Nicklaus’ accomplishment on the 16th hole so incredible was the Sunday pin placement. Because the hole was placed in the back left corner of the green, this called for Nicklaus to shape his iron shot from right to left, a draw was never one of Nicklaus’ strong suits. However, like all the great golfers of the past, Nicklaus knew how to execute a draw when he really needed to. It’s also interesting to note while Nicklaus came through with birdies on 16 in ’75 and ’86 on his way to victory, others who struggled to hit a draw (see David Duval) lost their chance to win The Masters on this hole. Photo by Harry How/Getty Images

Mastering the Draw: Since the vast majority of amateur golfers fight a slice, the idea of hitting a draw seems daunting at best. However, there are really only two simple factors that must be present to produce a right-to-left ballflight: the golf club must attack from a slightly inside-out path and the club face must be free to rotate on plane through impact. A good way to visualize this path is to imagine the club hitting the ball on the inside quadrant closest to the golfer. This visual will help the club stay behind your body longer during the downswing, allowing the correct path into impact.

Another good way to visualize the proper path is to imagine the club staying behind the hands while approaching impact. This prevents you from starting the downswing with your shoulders and arms during the downswing and keeps the club swinging on the proper plane. One last thing to remember is it’s much easier to draw the ball off the tee than it is off the ground. Be like Jack Nicklaus’ and always put the ball on a tee whenever possible, even on the par-3s.

The Essentials to Know when Buying Golf Clubs

The Essentials to Know when Buying Golf Clubs

If you are fairly new to the game, or just new to actually going out and purchasing a club on your own, read through our quick golf club buying guide. It is sure to set you straight on what you need to know about buying the perfect golf club for your needs.

What kind of golf clubs do you have to choose from?
First, let’s take a look at the types of golf clubs that make up a set. Typically, a golfer carries fourteen or fewer clubs in his or her bag. The four basic types of these golf clubs are Woods, Irons, Wedges, and Putters.

Another popular type of golf club nowadays is the Hybrid club. The Hybrid club is a cross between the Iron and the Wood, and is made for people who have difficulty using these other types of clubs. But before you get confused, let’s break these categories down a bit and take a closer look at them.

Woods:
Woods are usually used to hit long golf shots. Standard woods that are carried in a golf bag are 1, 3, and 5 Woods. Your 1 Wood is typically your driver. As the number of your wood increases (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) you lose the amount of distance it can go, but you gain a higher trajectory. Recent golf club technology has made higher lofted woods for shorter distances.

Irons:
Iron clubs are mostly used for shots that are expected to go an average distance – typically from 125 to 200 yards. The lower the number of iron, the less degree on the face of the iron – resulting in the longer amount of distance the ball can go. On the other hand, the higher the number of iron, the higher the degree on the face of the iron – resulting in the higher the loft a ball has.

The most popular irons used are 3 Irons though 9 Irons, however, many companies also manufacture 1 Irons as well as 10 Irons.

Wedges:
Wedges are used for semi-short golfshots. They are also used for chipping, and sand shots. There are several types of Wedges, including sand wedges, pitching wedges, and lob wedges.

Putters:
If you have ever watched a golfer up on the green, trying to hit a short shot into the hole, then he or she was most likely using a putter. A putter is a golf club that has a low loft. This enables the ball to roll father. A putter is typically shorter than all of your other golf clubs.

Should you buy new or used clubs?
Now that you understand a little bit more about your golf clubs, you must decide whether you want to purchase a new or used set. If you are fairly inexperienced, you may lean towards buying used clubs, instead of spending a great deal of money on a new purchase. However, when buying used clubs you should be wary about defects such as cracked shafts or worn grips. After all, these things will certainly not help you learn the game the right way. And, they may accumulate into worse money problems in the end.

Our advice to anyone starting off new to the game of golf, is to invest in a new set that works right with your height and build. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive set – but simply something that you can learn well on.

Should you purchase a complete set or put one together on your own?
One thing you should realize when putting together a golf set by yourself is that it will be a more expensive route to take then simply buying a set that is already put together. Putting together your own set can be quite confusing if you are merely a beginner. Our advice for starters is to get a complete starter set and go from there.

If you have leftover money, you may be better off to spend it on some golf lessons. Leave the picking and choosing to more advanced players who know exactly what they want.

In closing, have fun with your new golf clubs. Use them to learn how to excel in this challenging and entertaining game!

The most viewed Ping G15 clubs review

The most viewed Ping G15 clubs review

Ping G15 golf clubs, with thinner and longer club head, increased stability, make great shots. This innovation has also increased the height of your golf shots and decreased the spinning of your golf ball while in midair. The moment of inertia or MOI of your golf shots are likewise increased.

Another common innovation present in the entire G15 line of PINGs is the redistribution of weight, shifting the center of gravity closer to the golf club face. This results in the increase of weight in the bottom of the club without sacrificing swing speed. Ultimately, this also helps with your golf shot trajectory and lessens the spin of your golf ball.

And, last but not the least, the look and feel of the G15 golf clubs is a big improvement over the G10 set of clubs. A redesigned full cavity graphics badge (instead of the old moon-shaped ones) makes your golf swings feel softer and your golf shots sound more solid. These three innovations allow you to have superior control over your shots.

The Ping G15 golf club line come with a G15 Driver, G15 3-Wood, the G15 5-Wood, PING G15 Irons (from the sand wedge to the 3-iron), and the G15 Utility/Hybrid Club.

If you are a current Ping G10 or Ping G5 user, you should definitely consider upgrading to the latest Ping G15. Technology and materials have improved and it will make a difference in your golf game. Besides, wouldn’t you want to be the first on the block with the hottest set of G15 clubs?
