The Importance Of Control In Golf

The Importance Of Control In Golf

Article by Gerald Mason

Everything helping the development of good control must be encouraged, everything hindering it avoided. Their building up is largely unconscious and unnoticed, in-deed even a successful pupil will often feel that little progress is being made–until perhaps quite suddenly he will be surprised to find himself playing effective, confident golf.

I remember with special pleasure how that happened to a young pupil of mine. She had been in my hands since her childhood and her first experience of a major tournament was when she went over to England for the Ladies’ Open. She actually led the field in the qualifying rounds and was only put out on the last green in the semi-final..

On her return she said to me, “I did not know I could play like that! No one was more surprised than I was. I just played–and everything went right.”

I was delighted, but not so surprised. I knew she had the golf in her and that sooner or later the controls we were building would enable her to play it. But I was delighted, because you would not normally expect a young pupil to play a bit above her best on such a nerve-testing occasion.

So when a golfer says to me, “I must learn to concentrate–concentrate–concentrate!”

I counter with: “No, you must build controls–controls–controls!”

Now I claim that the right way of learning golf has almost nothing in common with the “learning” we did at school; it is an entirely different process. Memorizing the capitals of Europe or a Latin declension, or ‘learning” chemistry or mathematics, are purely mental feats and depend exclusively upon mental memory, whereas I contend that to learn to play good and consistent golf you need muscular memory.

What you need to learn (or memorize) are not the technical or mathematical details of a good shot but the feel of it. If you and every component muscle in you can remember the feel of a good shot, you can make it–and you have become what I term a reflex golfer. That is to say, the good shot has become your “reflex,” or automatic response to the sight of the ball. But please remember that this golf memory is a memory of a cycle of sensations which follow and blend into one another quite smoothly.

Each sensation must be connected up with those which precede and follow it; it cannot be considered independently. The truth is that it cannot even be felt independently. You cannot, to take a crude example, feel the top of your swing as such; you can only feel a sensation between the sensations of the back swing and those of the down swing.

For that reason you must never in golf say, “I’ve got it!” when you think you have found the secret of some shot that has been evading you–unless what you have “got” fits into your cycle of sensations or, as we shall now call them, controls. Because, unless it does so fit in, it cannot become a reliable part of your game. And why do I call sensations controls? Simply because I want you to control your golf by these sensations instead of by thought.

There is another reason why your memory of a golf shot must be a memory of a cycle of sensations, not of a number of separate sensations. It takes an exceedingly skilful juggler to juggle with six glass balls at once, but if the six balls were threaded onto a string most of us could manage them–and the memorizing of sensations as a cycle (instead of as independent items) does thread them up for us very much in this way.

To turn for a moment from learning to teaching. Most of the teaching of golf is completely negative– and a purely negative thing can have no positive value. Why do I say that golf teaching is negative? Well we can all find faults in each other’s game, millions of them, and we all start off to teach golf by pointing out these faults and “curing” them.

I did this for twenty-five years, but I have now discovered that the right way to get a pupil to hit the ball satisfactorily is to watch for any good natural qualities that may be there and to build up the swing around them.

We all hit a good ball sometimes. Maybe with the beginner this is an accident, but the good teacher will use such an accidental shot, photographing it in his mind and starting away to build up controls around the qualities which made it possible.

In this way the beginner can retain his natural capacity to hit the ball and will gain confidence in his ability to do it–and so go on enjoying his game and improving it. But if the teacher merely points out to him a dozen or more faults in his swing he will become perplexed, confused, and fed up. For that reason I never tell a pupil his faults (which is negative teaching).

I notice the faults, of course, and suggest the necessary corrections (which is positive). So I never tell a pupil that he over swings and breaks his left arm, I explain width to him. That is to say I give him a positive conception and by working on it he actually cures his faults without even being aware that he had them.

Now there is another point about teaching which I would like to emphasize. You will find that in this work I have not tried to set down a set of controls in one way and leave it at that. I have tried to set the same things down and explain them in many different ways. So when you find me repeating myself do not think it is carelessness!

All good teachers must repeat, but never in exactly the same words or with just the same connections. I want to give you a clear idea of the controls which will enable you to produce an effective swing, and I do not mind if I have to say the same thing in a dozen different ways so long as one of the twelve gets home with you. I hope you will not mind either, because you should be able to pick something new out of the other eleven also.

I learned golf by the long way–trial and error–and I want to lead you away from that to a method which is methodical and is effective whatever your age or your handicap may be.

If you accept my method of learning you do not need a lot of practice on the course to improve; you can assimilate the principles in your armchair and put in useful practice on the hearth rug–where you need no club because ye»u can feel your muscular movements without it. You must learn to feel the sensations through your intellect and then forget them intellectually and leave them to your muscular memory or control system.

How long does it take to “learn golf”? Well I am still learning after forty-five years of it!

I have known pupils who hit the ball very well after only four lessons and others who have taken a year or more to do even moderately well, but time is apt to level things out a lot. Golf is a curious game in being easy of comprehension but (sometimes) very long in realization. There is much darkness in the early stages, and it is only after a few years at the game that we really come out into full daylight and can assess our own possibilities.

Early difficulties are often emphasized by age or physical make-up. While I was writing this I had just started two young ladies–one of sixteen who is still at college but weighs about one hundred and seventy pounds and another in the early twenties who weighs less than half that.

Apart from the weight of their clubs the conditions will be the same for both, yet obviously their problems will work out very differently. And we have all got our physical individuality and peculiarities in the layout of bones and development of muscles.

But I have found by long experience that these things usually level themselves out in the end–I have seen many gifted and precocious beginners fail simply because they would not put in the hard work which is essential before the elementary stage is passed, and only when the elementary stage is passed can golf genius come to the surface.

On the other hand I remember one pupil of mine who started very young and at times could hardly get the ball off the ground; yet at eighteen she was scratch and Champion of France. And as I have already told, I started another lady at forty and though she was not gifted she was a worker and ten years later she eliminated Mme Lacoste from the French Open!

If you work in this way your golf will be progressive. You will still (being human) get bad patches, but each bad patch will tend to be less bad and each good patch will tend to be better, because you are building up your game.

So do not despair if you are trying to learn golf, or better golf, and getting no results. It may be that you have been trying to learn too many things (like juggling with too many balls) and when you have tried to add just one more, your whole game has broken down on you. We will simplify the things you have to learn by stringing them together into cycles of sensation because they are then easier to remember and easier to add to.

Is John Daly Good or Bad for Golf?

Is John Daly Good or Bad for Golf?

Article by Corrie Nel

Big Bad John is finding his way through the ups and downs of life. Sometimes he ends up in the media for the wrong reasons.

Ever since John Daly hit the major circuits he has been in the news for various reasons. Sometimes for the wrong reasons, based on his personal life.

Big John is in the unfortunate position that he is a high profile sporting giant. This means that his private life is privy to all and sundry. With all respect to the media, printed and otherwise, the bad, or should I say sad, side of his life gets a lot of attention. It is utter sensationalism, but that is what sells in the media business.

It seems like John is in the press more for negative reasons, than his skill on the golf courses of the world, which he has more than his fair share of.

He entertains crowds by hitting a golf ball crazy distances, even with his putter. Unlike Tiger, the ultimate technician and strategist, John throws caution to the wind by ripping his driver enormous distances, where angels fear to tread. Then he proceeds by displaying unbelievable touch on and around the greens.

John is often seen during coverage to bend over, pick up his cigarette and to walk off into the sunset after his golf ball. Not the image to expose youngsters to. But then, John has never claimed to be the ultimate role model.

The big man is known as the regular party animal, not adverse to consuming large quantities of brewed beverages in relatively short spaces of time. Smoking, drinking and a good measure of domestic uprisings is just a natural part of him.

When you are exposed to the masses the way sporting celebrities are, this type of behavior just does not make for our perception of sporting greats.

Then Big Bad John hits the fairways of the world, and guess what? We are still in awe of the man who, I believe, can win anything whenever he wants to.

I watched him during the recent USPGA Championship. No, I watched the crowds. They still love him. They still watch in amazement as he goes about his business the only way he knows. Nobody cares about the press and whatever goes wrong in his life. They just want to see John Daly do what John Daly does best and only John Daly can do!

Good or bad for golf? That is debatable. The fact remains he still pulls the crowds and wows them with his brand of golf.Long live John Daly – we need our own characters in golf and you are one of them!

Love him or hate him, international golf will be a little duller without him.

My Torn Rotator Cuff – Nearly Made Me Pack In Golf

My Torn Rotator Cuff – Nearly Made Me Pack In Golf

Article by Nick Bryant

As I am a slightly older dad with young kids I do try hard to try to stay fit and active so that I can keep up with my kids as they grow uo. I also enjoy a game of golf, a good walk ruined as they say. I’m not a briiliant player as I never get to play as often as I would like but I do enjoy it, so was really hacked off when I developed a shoulder problem that stopped me playing.

It wasn’t actually as simple as that. The shoulder injury turned out to be nothing less than a torn rotator cuff which prevented me from doing any sort of activity. It was painful when I walked or ran, even though I am right handed, any sudden movement could cause serious pain in my left shoulder. If I forgot for a moment and made a sudden movement I could end up crying with pain. I know exactly how I did it. I was being impatient and trying to lift some flat packed furniture on my own rather than waiting for help, felt a pop in my shoulder and that was that. Shoulder messed up| The next morning I woke up with a painful shoulder and it just got worse with each passing day.

I couldn’t reach much above shoulder height, reaching for anything was impossible. I couldn’t reach behind me. I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t get comfortable and doing anything with the kids was impossible. Golf was just not going to happen for the forseeable future. So I took myself off to the doctors who sent me to a specialist. He diagnosed my torn rotator cuffand confirmed it with an MRI scan. Your shoulder joint is a simple ball and socket joint. Unlike the hip, the socket is made up of cartilage and not bone like in the hip, and doesn’t grip the bone of the arm. Instead, a group of four muscles help to hold the arm in place and stabilise the shoulder joint. These make up the rotator cuff. I had managed to tear one of these muscles which caused inflammation. Because all the muscles fit snuggly together any inflammation causes an impingement or pinching.

The muscle that I had torn is called the supraspinatus. I had torn a tendon that runs under my clavicle or collar bone and the end of my scapula or shoulder blade. Because it was inflammed, each time that I moved in a certain wayit got pinched or impingedpinched and was aggravated. I was recommended for surgery to cut away part of my collar bone to free up the trapped tendon and allow it to heal without any more damage. It all sounded very easy but I was a bit worried.

Being in the UK we are used to waiting for surgery so I took the time to find out about rotator cuff problems while waiting for my surgery date. Having read up on my injury extensively I finally discovered that most rotator cuff problems are treated with physical therapy.Even a torn rotator cuff can be fixed in this way, as long as it is only a partial tear. You start off by resting the joint to allow the inflammation to calm down, treating it with anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen and using ice packs. Once the inflammation and pain have calmed down you can start gentle physical therapy exercises aimed at strengthening the rotator cuff

Within six weeks my shoulder was pain free and the movement had improved dramatically. A few more weeks saw me return to full fitness. I have put off the surgery and will probably be cancelling it altogether if I remain pain free.

In the meantime I am playing golf again, still losing but hey, I do have a bad shoulder!

Longest Drive in Golf

Longest Drive in Golf

Article by J Knight

Having the longest driver in golf gives you a big advantage over the other players. While they are still trying to get near the green on a second shot you may be chipping to the hole. The closer you are to the green with your 2nd shot after a long drive, the better chance you have of coming in at or even under par. Hitting the longest driver is not easy however. It takes a combination of the proper equipment and the right fitness. Some folks are just plain gifted when it comes to the long drive, but everyone can improve the length of their drives by obtaining the proper clubs and working on physical fitness.

The first step that most people take when seeking to improve the length of their drive is to buy a new driver. The difficult part is that there is not one club that is the best for everyone. If you want to fit the longest drive you must have a club that perfectly matches your strength and size. You want a club that you can swing fast but you do not want to sacrifice the accuracy of your shot. There is no benefit to hitting the ball far if it does not go where you want. Hitting the ball twenty yards further into the woods or worse, out of bounds, is not going to improve your score any.

So, where should you start looking for the best long stick for the big drive? If you want to go with the best, you must take a look at Krank Golf’s El Diablo Driver. This is the club that won the Remax World Long Drive Championships and captured second, third, fourth, six and seventh places in 2008. That paints the picture as a club capable of hitting the long drive with proven results. So, after you have found a long stick that you are excited about, does that mean you will immediately begin hitting the longest drives in your Sunday group? It may and it may not. I killer, well fit, club will always improve the distance of your drives, but a club can not do it alone.

You may find you are still losing out to a friend who is stronger or one who hits a bucket at the range every day at lunch. These are the two other factors in hitting the longest drive, strength and practice. This does not necessarily mean you have to be in perfect shape. Take John Daly for example. With his ample gut he is far from Mr. Adonis, but he is a bear of a man with strength where it counts and near perfect form. Daly also practices his drive for a lot of hours to get the consistent results that he gets.

After you finish practicing with a swing trainer your original club will seem so much lighter and you will be able to swing it faster while maintaining the a certain level of accuracy. And accuracy is just as important for your game because hitting it 350 yards does not do you any good if the ball is in the bushes.Increasing your overall strength will also help you to kill the ball down the fairway. When hitting the gym, You will want to lift lighter weights at high reps to create lean muscle mass without a lot of bulk. Be sure to include stretching into your routine to keep from becoming tight and potentially losing flexibility.

Enhancing your physical strength will also help you to hit the ball really far. If you look a Golf Pros, you notice that none of them are overly muscular (buff). This does not mean that they are not fit because they are, but they try to avoid putting on a lot “big muscle”. This is because getting “buff” limits your flexibility and that can have a bad impact your swing speed. You want to lift light weights at higher reps to stack-on lean muscle mass.

Once you have found the right equipment and improved on your strength, the only thing left is practice. Follow these golf and fitness tips and you will soon be crushing your longest driver ever.

How to Chip in Golf

How to Chip in Golf

Article by Jamie Faidley

One of the most important things to remember if you want to learn how to chip better is just how important it is to have clean, consistent contact. You will need to strike the ball on the way down, avoiding hitting the ground before you hit the ball. Repeating clean contact is not easy, but once you can do it you will quickly find it much easier to control the distance of your chips. Once you learn that distance control you will be able to putt from closer distances, cutting strokes off of your game.

Ball Alignment

While you are swinging a golf club, the middle of your center of gravity is where the lowest point typically falls. Because you want to avoid hitting the ground before you strike the ball, you should move the ball just behind center at address. For beginners, use two inches behind your center, then you can adjust as you become more comfortable. Just don’t forget to keep this ball location consistent as moving it will change the angle of your club impact and you will find it harder to consistently strike the ball cleanly.

Hand Position

You will need to work on consistent hand position each time you chip. Your hands should be in the same place with each chip you make. You will want to position your hands in front of the ball. Draw a straight line from the point where your right knuckle sticks out the farthest. That line typically falls just in front of your ball and is a good reference point to use for your hand positioning.

Weight Balance

Your weight should be distributed about 40 percent-60 percent with more of your weight on your front foot. This is going to help cut down on hitting fat shots by making the lower point of the swing more toward your front foot. Getting this balance down will help you to your goal of hitting clean chip shots more consistently.

Club Alignment

Make an extra effort to keep your club face squared to your target. While playing the ball back in your stance your club face may float open, which requires that extra bit of focus for chipping.

This setup should help you make more up and downs from just beyond the green. Be sure you check my other golf chipping tips if you are looking for additional assistance with improving your chip shots.

You’d better Build Muscle Memory in Golf

You’d better Build Muscle Memory in Golf

Article by Cheapgolf

With the driver a wider stance is needed to support the greater swing arc and it’s merely an optical illusion that the ball inside the left heel looks further forward than with a shorter club.

For the callaway X series (=http://www.golfclubsequipments.com/goods-959-Callaway+X+Series+JAWS+Chrome+Wedge.html) in your bag, keep the stance shoulder-width; with a mid-iron narrow the stance slightly (but with the ball still two inches inside the left heel) and with a wedge retain the ball position but have the feet a little closer together.

The unique technique of Canadian player Mike Weir is more fluid swing freely. Far away from the ball where he chose to hit a specific point routes and as a target, such as a tree trunk, and even a flagpole, and then adjust the way the handle and take the stance. When checking the distance of the point, he will be removed from the ball shaft and practice swing in the correct swing plane.

He then aimed shot from the point of exercise, stretching the club, and then on the bar and send rods. All are carried out in order to build muscle memory and repeat the swing. Mike – Virginia is one of the world’s best putter. The precise degree of skill is much better than American players Brad Faxon. His putter method is very simple to reverse cross-grip, gently hit the ball. He repeated this program every time.

No one can be like Mike – Virginia read as Augusta greens, putt putt, first determine the route, and then let the ball rolled over the ball one foot in front of a point, until you hear the ball rolled into the cup before Looked up. The secret is putting a lot of good putting is to control the rhythm. Before you start a game before they can practice putting stroke.

By the way, here is a good golf clubs. The X series jaws chrome wedges offer you the short game that you have been looking for. Maximum Spin and the ability to create shots that you didn’t think were possible. Looking for Tour Level Feel? Look no further. Available in Steel or Graphite.

It is not easy to put the ball 20 feet one after another in the beginning. 3 balls out, select a hole, and then advance from 4 feet 10 to 12 balls. These goals are critical, so in order to control the ball very well need to persevere in the length of practice.

He believes that it helps build muscle memory swing, so practice time is limited if the rod is not easy, but no other way. Not exactly one of the key swing that does not slow ball, control the ball the length of the rod, and then with the rod. No matter how kind of situation, in the hitting zone must speed up the swing Caixing.

Golf Swing Techniques-5 Tips How to Cure a Slice in Golf

Golf Swing Techniques-5 Tips How to Cure a Slice in Golf

Article by Terry Gorry

The 5 tips I set out in this article will cure your slice..and add distance to every club in your bag.If they don’t then golf is not the game for you..

Before you get into golf swing techniques in any meaningful way you will need to learn how to cure a slice in golf. Because your slice will cost you miles in distance in the course of a year’s golf.

Here are 5 tips to help you get rid of your slice..

Tip1-Strengthen Your Grip

This is the simplest way to get rid of your slice and it simply involves turning both hands more to the right (if you are right handed) on the grip of the club so that the vees formed by your thumb and forefinger are pointing to or outside your right shoulder.

Tip 2-Sort our your set up

Make sure that your shoulders are not open at set up. Ensure that they are square or even slightly close initially until you lose your slice because open shoulders will cause a downswing that causes you to cut across the ball at impact which will have you slicing all day.

Tip 3-Tilt Your Spine Angle to the right at set up.

This will promote an approach to the ball from the inside, not the outside which will encourage a draw shot.

Tip 4-Favour your right side in terms of weight distribution at set up

This will ensure that you are not hanging on your left side in the takeaway which encourages a reverse pivot and a steep approach to the ball through impact.

Tip 5-Release your forearms through impact

This involves a good free release through impact with the right forearm crossing over the left through impact and on into the follow through.

So before you get too bogged down in golf swing techniques, learn how to cure a slice in golf and these tips will have you hitting raking draws in no time.

Some Optional Accessories for Golf

Some Optional Accessories for Golf

Article by Darren Pace

There are a plethora of accessories available for playing golf in addition to the most basic equipment needed to simply play the game (a ball & clubs) at its most rudimentary level. A golf bag and golf shoes are probably the first two additions to the equipment that one should consider, but after these two items, the items become a little more personalized based on individual features, characteristics, and the ability to purchase. Some items that one may wish to seriously consider purchasing next would be:

1) The USGA Rules of Golf. Yes, there are many rules to the game and a firm understanding of the rules will simultaneously frustrate and enhance your ability to play the game well. The rules will define some of the golf accessories that are available for the game of golf that are actually forbidden by the rules, so you may want to start right here if you have any desire to play in any sanctioned competitions in the future.

2) Consider purchasing a golf umbrella. As an accessory for golf, an umbrella is one of those things that you will hopefully not need often, but when you do it will be the best piece of equipment in your bag. Just picture yourself about as far away from the clubhouse as you can possibly be when that thunderstorm breaks loose to know the answer why.

3) In addition to an umbrella one should consider a golf rain suit as an additional golf accessory. These are a wonderful addition for the die-hard golfer that wants to finish the round even though it has started to drizzle and looks as if it is not going to stop for a while.

4) A very popular accessory for golf is also the golf glove. This addition can greatly enhance the players grip on the club and significantly improve solid contact on each and every shot. Additionally, specific gloves are also manufactured for playing in the rain as well.

5) Another accessory for golf that is very popular is the clip-on towel. A towel is a great addition for removing debris from the golf ball and/or the golf clubs after making a shot. Additionally low cost items such as ball markers and green repair tools can add a little spice to the game.

6) Club covers are a great accessory for golf clubs to protect them from damage that can occur in transit or while being carried, wheeled, or carted along on the golf course.

7) Specialty clubs are also a great way to personalize your equipment based on your strengths and weaknesses. There are a wide variety of clubs available that one can purchase in addition to the standard set of clubs including, but not limited to, “trouble woods”, sand wedges, ultra-loft pitching wedges, and drivers with various lofts, head styles, shaft lengths and stiffness’.

8) Putters. Putting is half the game and deserves a lot of attention because of it. A wide range of different putters are available that will allow the individual to further personalize their golf accessories up to and including head covers for the putter as well.

This is just a small snapshot of the many different, but perhaps more popular, accessories for golf.
