Every year after the long hibernation of winter, we dust off our bags, shine up our shoes, polish our clubs, and head off to the golf course to play the gentlemen’s game of golf. So I thought that this would be a wonderful time to think about why we play golf, and review some points of golf etiquette. There is an old golf saying, “Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair.” We would always do well to follow this simple rule as it makes the game more enjoyable for everyone concerned.

Golf is a social game, and you frequently find an interesting mix of players on the course at any given time.

So, as we begin a new season of play, this is a wonderful time to think about why we play golf, and review some points of golf etiquette.

Always think safety. There are little, round projectiles sailing past you on all sides. Look where you aim to make sure that there are no other players in your path. Keep your eyes open for a stray ball plummeting from the sky, and sound the alert, “Fore!” if you’ve hit a wild one!

Be considerate of other players in the group by limiting your movement and taking care to speak quietly especially when other players are lining up their shots. You will appreciate it when your friends afford you the same courtesy.

Be aware of your pace of play. Try to rate yourself to the pace of the course on any given day, but if that is just not working, always be polite and allow a faster group to play through, and try not to breathe down the neck of the group in front of you.

Do your absolute best to leave the course as you found it. Everyone causes a divot at some point in his golf career, and there is no shame in this. Leaving it in disrepair, however, is just plain inconsiderate. This same rule would apply to leaving ball marks on the greens. Somewhat in the same vein, when you plow through a bunker, the rake is provided for a reason, to make it like you were never there!

By just putting a little thought into your fellow golfers, you can make everyone’s golfing day the best one — so far anyway!

Council has not previously had to process or make a decision on a stormwater harvesting proposal.Council Officers have been diligent and thorough in completing a comprehensive review of the RACV proposal including commissioning legal advice and independent peer reviews of the proposal. In considering the application, Council Officers sought advice from a range of agencies including Southern Rural Water, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority.Since the application was lodged with Council in September 2009, RACV has cooperated fully with Council throughout the review process, consulted extensively with key stakeholders, provided detailed reports regarding engineering design, water flows and environmental impacts and commissioned further consultant reports when requested.In their report to Council, Council Officers stated that “on balance, the harvesting of stormwater with appropriate management and monitoring can actually contribute to the long term health of the Jan Juc Creek system.”Sue Blake, the RACV Executive General Manager, Member Interests said “This is a very important decision for Council. The proposal will facilitate long term improvements in the Jan Juc creek system by removing high stormwater flows that degrade the creek environment further, whilst ensuring a sustainable supply of water for the Golf course that will improve the amenity of play for thousands of players each year.”The 1,200 members of Torquay Golf Club are eager to see this matter resolved in order that the long awaited works on the course can commence.”Works on the course are poised to start immediately approval from the Surf Coast Shire for the construction of the pipeline is granted. RACV has appointed Geelong construction company Civil Force to carry out the initial works to ensure a flying start to the project.The redevelopment of the Torquay Golf Club includes a redevelopment of the golf course including construction of two new dams, a new irrigation system for the whole course, reconstruction of nine greens and 13 tees and associated bunkers and fairway improvements. The works will be staged over a three year period, with members able to play 18 holes throughout the project. The course will also be revegetated, with 130,000 mainly indigenous native species of trees, shrubs and ground covers to be planted as part of the project.The Torquay Golf Club facilities include new changes rooms, Golfers lounge, spike bar, golf facilities and pro shop. A resort style facility is to be developed including accommodation, leisure facilities (indoor pool, tennis courts, gymnasium, games room, day spa and wellness centre), a 170 seat restaurant and café, a conference centre and function rooms for up to 200 people.The project is expected to take three years to complete.”The M Torquay project is a major investment for RACV, delivering a spectacular and prestigious tourist and recreational facility in one of the most iconic and beautiful coastal regions of Australia,” said Ms Blake.”Based on our experience at other RACV Resorts, we anticipate significant growth on visitors to the Torquay area as a result of the project, including a boost in interstate and international visitors.”The Torquay community will benefit from a surge in jobs during the construction phase, and the creation of approximately 100 new jobs in the longer term,” she said.”This project continues RACV’s proud tradition of supporting Victorians for more than 100 years, providing jobs and creating a first class facility for RACV’s two million members.”About RACV:RACV offers a wide range of emergency roadside assistance packages for cars and other vehicles including caravans, trailers, bicycles and motorbikes.

Chipping has three main ingredients for a great golf shot. It requires finesse, imagination and memory. Take the example of a great artist with a paintbrush. Have you ever noticed the finesse with the stroke of his or her brush? An artist does not complete a great drawing, without remembering prior dos and don’ts. Notice how their imagination creates a great drawing in the end. What has this got to do with golf?

These are the necessary ingredients required to make a great golf shot happen. The only difference in comparing the two artists is the type of tool they are using to perform the task. If you have finesse with the golf club, along with imagination, the results will be a great golf shot, just like an artist using the finesse and imagination in a great drawing.

Learning to finesse a golf club is a very delicate task. Next time you’re watching a golf tournament on TV, watch the pros chip around a green. It looks like their golf swing is in slow motion. The professional golfer guides the head of the club on the takeaway, creating the precise amount of weight necessary to make the ball bounce off of the face of the club for the intended landing area.

To help accomplish this delicate shot, ingredient number two has to be in place. The imagination is the preparation prior to this finessed shot. It helps complete the physical motion and timing necessary for proper weight distribution for the club head speed. When you actually visualize the golf chip before everything is in motion, it triggers the memory in guiding the muscles and timing to create the perfect shot.

So how do we create finesse and imagination with chipping? Practicing over and over again, until chipping becomes a sixth sense. It may seem disappointing at first, but try and pick up a paintbrush and create great artwork with the first couple attempts. Make this following practice drill your favorite pastime if you want to zone in on the golf hole out on the golf course.

Take your golf bag and pull out your favorite lofted golf clubs and rest the bag lying flat on the ground. Take out as many golf balls as possible, if you’re not in the middle of a round of golf. The more golf balls you use, the more enjoyment you will receive out of this drill and less time walking back and forth. You will lose interest if you have to constantly gather a small amount of balls all the time.

Try practice chipping the ball just over your golf bag or hitting it. Move the bag away from the golf balls about 5,10 and 15 yards to start. This will be your intended landing area when you are out on the course. The golf bag will be your target to hit, or go over for distance memory. The key goal here is to train your memory for the distance of a chip shot with certain clubs.

If you want to learn to pick up the golf ball fast, move the bag closer to you standing it upright, or distance the bag away from you for those longer lofted shots. Do not change clubs until you have accomplished a certain goal in mind, like the number of times you hit the bag, or by dropping the golf ball slightly over it. If you want to learn the distance on running an accurate 7 or a 6 iron, move the bag a least twenty to twenty-five yards from your hitting area.

As you progress in your chipping skill, try different techniques on bouncing the golf ball off the face of a golf club to see how the ball reacts with a variety of short irons, and see how high and far the ball travels with an intended target and a goal in mind.

This practice drill will help build your confidence out on the fairway when you have to chip over hazards. When you are unable to hit greens in regulation, regulate the amount of times you use your putter by practicing this drill often. Instead of getting frustrated waiting for the group ahead of you on a slow day, try practicing with one or two golf balls alongside a tee box, if you are not playing a match or in a tournament.

You will eventually notice a lower scorecard, even on a bad day when your longer golf clubs and putter let you down. It is a good feeling when obstacles like sand traps and water hazards, become part of the scenario on the golf course, and not an obstacle to potentially ruin your great round.
