Golf swing improvement can be elusive for most golfers. I have read many articles and studies on the huge number of golfers quitting the game every year. They are tired of putting in the time, buying equipment, taking lessons, and purchasing every golf training aid on the market only to see no golf swing improvement.

You can’t fault a frustrated golfer who experiences the above and quits. Life is too short to spend 5 hours on a golf course and not enjoy it.

Let’s discuss why this happens!

First off, golf swing improvement should be approached from the inside-out. That means starting with your body. If your body has physical restrictions, you won’t ever be able to make a repeatable golf swing with any power or accuracy. It’s a physical impossibility.

You can try-and-try, but it won’t happen!

You body dictates your golfing ability. Like in any sport, raw talent is hard to come by and is only for a small percent of the athletic community.

Do you feel like you should be a better golfer? How many times have you walked off the course in disgust…knowing you should have played much better? This is a common occurrence and one that can be fixed quickly.

The right approach to golf swing improvement is one that looks at your current golf swing faults and the ‘physical’ reason behind it. I see this all the time. A golfer takes a lesson; the instructor tells the golfer what he needs to do; and the golfer can’t do it!

What a frustrating situation!

For every swing fault, there is an underlying ‘physical’ reason why it keeps happening.

Let me give you one of many examples to substantiate the above statement.

You are a slicer. That means you come “over-the-top” with your upper body. Do you want to know one of the many reasons why this happens?

Here goes!

You have poor core strength and flexibility.

If your body cannot initiate the downswing with the lower body, especially the hips rotating; it is because your core muscles are sending a message to your brain saying, “we can’t do this, so figure out another way (compensation) to get me back to the ball.”

Now the upside to this scenario.

You work on your core rotational strength and flexibility. You don’t hit more balls. You don’t add more swing thoughts to your swing. You don’t do drills at the range til your hands are bleeding. You just improve your core. That’s it!

The result?

You are able to initiate the downswing with your lower body, create and retain stored energy in your core area, and you not only stop your slice, but you add 30 yards to your drives!

That’s golf swing improvement the right way!

Again, this is just one example of a golf swing fault; and the cause and solution to eliminating it forever.

Now golf is fun again!

1.Pull Hook: The pull hook is a golf fault that starts left and curves farther left.

2.Hook: The hook shot is a golf fault that starts right of target and curves left of target.

3.Pull: The pull is a golf fault that starts left of target and continues straight left.

4.Push: The push shot is a golf fault that starts right of target and continues straight right.

5.Slice: The slice shot is a golf fault that starts left, but finishes right of target.

6.Push Slice: The push slice is a golf fault that starts right of target and continues farther right.

7.Thin/topped Shot: A thin or “topped” golf fault occurs when the leading edge of club strikes equator of ball usually sending the golf ball a few inches off the ground and only a few feet.

8.Fat/Duffed Shot: A “fat” or “duffed” golf fault occurs when the golfer hits behind the ball and hits the turf before the ball is struck sometimes popping the ball in the air with little distance.

9.Shank Shot: A “shank” occurs when the ball strikes hosel of club and ball flies viciously to right.

10.Left Arm Collapse (also known as “Chicken Wing”): occurs when the left arm collapses before club face impact with the golf ball resulting in significant power loss and errant golf shots.

11.Pop-Up Golf Shot: A “pop-up” golf shot occurs when the golf ball is popped straight up into the air with little distance usually resulting from too steep of a swing.

12.Poor Distance: Poor distance occurs when the golfer makes decent contact with the golf ball but does not achieve adequate distance with either irons or woods shots.  This usually occurs because the upper and lower body are not synchronized to achieve maximum swing speed and power.

A common golf swing fault is to “slice” the golf ball.  For right handed golfers, a golf slice occurs when the golf ball starts left of the target once struck, but finishes well right of the target.  The golf slice is one of the worse swing faults encountered on the course because it often results in a very poor position to hit the next shot and because there are many causes to the golf slice.  Common causes of the golf slice include an open clubface at impact, too “weak” of a golf grip, poor body weight transfer and/or an out-to-in or “over the top” swing.

To fix the golf slice, the golfer should first ensure that he or she is properly aligned toward the target with hips, shoulders and feet all square to the target line.  Second, the golfer should ensure that the swing path taken is more in-to-out or in-to-square-to –in rather than out-in.  Third, the golfer should ensure a neutral golf grip position and a square clubface at impact.

Practice Drills to Fix the Golf Slice

To fix the golf slice, top PGA teaching professionals recommend practice drills that help incorporate the proper golf swing mechanics into the golf swing and ingrain the correct “feeling” of a well-executed golf shot.  Here are several of the most popular practice drills to fix the golf slice.

SLICE TEE DRILL

Corrects slices caused by OUT-IN swings and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.

• Place two tees and ball right to left diagonally, creating an IN-SQUARE-IN swing path. Allow about 4″x 4″ spacing from each tee to ball.

• Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.

• Hit ball crisply without hitting tees.

BACK TO TARGET DRILL

Encourages IN-SQUARE-IN swing path and club release.

• Perform drill half-speed with 7-iron and teed ball.

• Select target and assume normal setup.

• Leaving arms in position and club face square to target, rotate feet 45° with back directed toward target.

• Swing along body line and hit 5 to 10 shots.

* Place two tees and ball left to right diagonally, creating an IN-SQUARE-IN swing path. Allow about 4″x 4″ spacing from each tee to ball.* Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.* Hit ball crisply without hitting tees.
