What Causes a Golf Shot to Slice or Hook Anyway?

While there are many variables that can cause a golf ball to curve, only two things can happen at the time the club meets the ball that can affect the direction of the ball. This article explains what causes a misdirected golf shot not how to fix the problems. Information on learning the fundamentals of a sound golf shot are at the end of this article. So the first factor which causes a slice or hook is the direction that the club head is traveling when it hit the ball and the second is the position of the club head at the time it contacts the golf ball.

 

The Direction of the Club

As the club comes down from the top of your swing it travels inside, or close to your body, and then travels straight down the line leading to your target. After it hit’s the ball it should then travel back inside the line and on to the finish of your swing. At least that’s how it’s suppose to work. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Now if you swing inside/out then when your club meets the ball it will still be traveling to the right of the target, which will cause the ball to start traveling to the right. If the opposite is true and you swing outside/in, then when the club hit’s the ball you will start the ball off to the left. If you swing inside/out then you initially “push” your shot. And if you swing outside/in then you initially “pull” the ball.

In both cases, if you hit the ball squarely with the club face facing the same direction that the club is going then you will have a push to the right or a pull to the left. Not so bad. If however you have the club face facing the target and the club direction to either the right or left then you will impart a spin on the ball. This is sometimes referred to as cutting across the ball. This will cause the golf ball to curve in the direction of the spin. The result is a draw to the left or a fade to the right.

The Position of the Club Head

Now the other factor that determines a slice of a fade, the position of the club head at impact. This determines whether there will be a side spin on the ball or not. Ideally you will swing directly at the target with the club head facing directly at the target too. This results in a ball that does not have side spin and your golf shot will travel straight providing the wind does not affect it. But if you contact the ball with the club face facing to the right (open face) or with the club face facing to the left (closed face) then you will cause the ball to spin. This spin causes the ball to fade or slice to the right, or draw or hook to the left.

A Deadly Combination 

If you have the misfortune of combining either a push or a pull with an open face or closed face, then you have real trouble. If your shot initially starts to the left and then curves to the right, you have an outside/in swing with an open club face. This will result in a slice. The more you pull the shot or the more open your club face the more extreme your slice will be. This is where that banana slice comes from. You know, the shot that looks like it’s going into the woods on the left only to end up in the water on the right.

Conversely, if your shot starts to the right and then curves to the left, then you have an inside/out swing with a closed club face which will result in a hook. And of course the more you push the shot or close the face the more extreme the hook will be. And we all know where that shot ends up.

 

 

What it Takes to Fix it

Now that you know what two factors cause a slice of fade you can fiddle with your swing to see if you can straighten it out a bit. But of course the sure cure is a fundamentally sound golf swing. One that is repeatable and dependable. Weight shift, hip turn, shoulder position, wrist roll are all important to a sound golf swing. Your golf long irons are usually identified as the one, two, three, and four irons. The vast majority of players generally will simply carry a three and four iron inside their golf bag. Quite seasoned golfers sometimes also employ a one or two iron, but this isn’t the norm.

A majority of the present leading players have a superb game with regards to utilizing these longer golf clubs. This originates from being very familiar with them, which only occurs as a result of consistent practice. If the golfer is only concerned with the short game and putting, they will likely not possess the practical experience and self confidence needed to learn the use of these clubs.

To be able to genuinely succeed with long irons there are actually a couple of techniques that should be mastered. The very first is addressing the ball. This doesn’t suggest saying “hello” and “how are you?” Addressing the ball relates to the stance that you take when getting prepared to strike it. Using a longer club, your stance should be wider than it would if you were working with a shorter club.

As it relates to the flight path your ball will take, your posture must be a little bit closed. Your shoulders, hips and your feet need to be squared towards the ball, meaning that they will need to be in the direction of the hole on an imaginary parallel line. The next step to be mindful of when using golf long irons is the backswing. For a powerful backswing, move the head of the club backwards around ten to twelve inches along the ground using the shoulders and body just to slightly turn when you move into your swing. As your swing passes the outside of your right leg, your arms and hands need to be cocking slightly towards the sky. By the time you reach the top of the backswing, your right side should be holding most of your weight. At the top of your backswing, your turn should be complete and your wrists should be fully cocked. If you allow your left heel to lift just slightly from the ground, it makes it possible for your hips to be free from strain when you turn away from your ball.

The third step is the downswing. As you begin your downswing, you need to anchor your left heel securely against the ground. If you endeavor to make this a constant component of your downswing, it is going to become second nature. By simply doing so, you’re sure to be on the inside plane of the downswing. Your swing will be from the inside out if your weight is too far forward on your toes. When you are halfway through your swing, the wrists need to be completely cocked and your right elbow just a bit tucked in against your right hand side. Your body weight should be shifting in the direction of your left hand side as your right hand side begins to drive into your actual shot.The crucial element to utilizing these clubs is to remember to sustain a smooth swing. Do not rush into your swing by moving way too quickly. That is where much more inexperienced golfers lose their focus. Sustain your pace as you keep your swing smooth.

How To Hit The Golf Ball Longer And Straighter With Your Driver

The mechanics of a golf swing are more complex than perhaps that of any other sport on the planet. A good golf swing must be underpinned with sold fundamentals including solid grip, square alignment to the target, a solid base / stance, and a dynamic upright posture. For the purpose of this article I am going to assume that you have solid basic fundamentals.

Please try a selection of the following tips and see which ones have a positive impact on your game. I can guarantee that you will begin to hit the ball further than you have ever done before.

Tip # 1 – Adopt a Stronger Grip

A neutral golf grip is when you can see 2 knuckles of your left hand / the hand at the top of the shaft. A weak grip is when you see less than 2 knuckles on the upper hand. This action tends to promote a fade or slice as the grip returns to neutral at impact thus ensuring the face is opened if the grip is weak. A strong grip is one in which you can see 3 or 4 knuckles on your left hand (for right handed golfers).

A good way to measure a strong grip is to make the “V’s” formed by the thumb and index finger point towards your right shoulder. A strong grip will tend to promote a draw which every golfer knows is a top spin shot that travels much further.

This is especially true with their left hand. To achieve this you should see about three to four knuckles on your left hand. This gives you so much more leverage in terms of your wrist movement. You are able to wait to the last moment to release the club, which results in a surge of club head speed through impact.

Tip # 2 – Release Tensions in Your Hands and Arms

If you were to really tense up your leg muscles and attempt to run a race, you would not be able to walk very fast let alone say run. The muscles in your hands and arms are no different. The grip pressure is perhaps the most important element to eliminating a tense rigid swing. Grip pressure should be light but firm. Professional golfers have stated that you should grip the golf club with the same pressure as if you were:

Lightly squeezing a tube of tooth paste Holding a child’s hand Holding a small bird in your hand Use which ever analogy is best for you but remember always be conscious of your grip pressure especially just before you commence your take away. It is literally not possible to grip a club too lightly. Your muscles will instinctively increase grip pressure throughout your swing to ensure the club does not fly out of your hands.

A light grip pressure will also have the positive effect of releasing tension in your arms. Build a few waggles into your pre-shot routine to further ensure there is no build up of tension.

You will be shocked an amazed how much further your ball will fly as a result of relaxed hand and arm muscles.

Tip # 3 – Increase the Width of Your Arc

Try this simple drill to realize the importance of the swing arc. Hold a golf ball in your hand 10 or so inches directly over your right shoulder. Now throw the ball as far as you can. You will notice the ball didn’t travel very far. Now extend you right hand back as far as is comfortably possible and throw the ball as far as you can. You will notice that the ball traveled significantly further. Many amateur golfers fail to realize the importance of the width of the swing arc in determining the distance the ball flies.

Perhaps the best tip that I have come across for creating a wide powerful swing arc is that of Greg Normans. Greg Norman has long been one of the longest straightest drivers of the golf ball. His tip is simple and powerful. At your address position ensure your left arm and club shaft form a straight line down to the ball. Make sure there is no tension whatsoever in the hand or arm.

Now simply push your left elbow back away from the target. Keep pushing it back, back, back all the way. Sooner or later as your swing reaches the three quarter way position, somethings going to give and your wrist will automatically cock at the top. This business of an early wrist cock advocated by some of the games teachers doesn’t work very well because it eliminates the extension of your arc which is a key source of power in the swing. With sufficient practice, this powerful technique will seriously increase your driving distance.

Tip # 4 – Delay the Club Head Release Through Impact

Many of the games greats will differ in their back swing but generate a very similar down swing sequence. Contrast “Jim Furyk” with “Tiger Woods”. One swing attribute that they all have in common is a powerful late release of the club head (also known as club head lag). In my opinion the golfer with one of the most powerful late releases is “Sergio Garcia”. He has a rather unorthodox back swing but a powerful late release ensures he hits the golf ball a long, long way. What I mean by late release of the golf club is a delayed uncocking/release of the wrists just before impact.

Many amateurs suffer from the dreaded ‘casting’ motion whereby they throw the club at the ball from the top of the swing. Thus they are releasing all their power long before the club ever nears the ball. In order to create a late release you should consciously focus on retaining your fully cocked wrists for as long as possible prior to impact. I have come across two excellent tips to achieve this goal. Please only use one or the other as you should never have two simultaneous swing thoughts prior to impact. The club head is moving too fast to execute more than one.

Insert a tee peg at the butt end of your shaft and focus on the mental image of trying to drive that tee peg into the back of the ball. To condense this into one neat phrase think “pull butt of shaft down to back of ball”. This will cause a very late release of your club and store up considerable power during the downswing.

Ernie Els uses ‘Golf’s Magic Move’, which is a swing thought devised by guru Harvey Pennick for creating a late release of the golf club. To execute this technique, one you arrived at the top of your back swing think “right elbow down to right side”. This effectively retains the wrist angle and ensures a late release into the back of the ball.

Tip # 5 – Increase Your Coil

This move is not for those who have a stiff, unsupple back or back problems in any sense of the word. Effectively one of the greatest sources of power in a golf swing is the coiling of your shoulder turn against your hip turn. The further you can turn your shoulder and limit your hip turn the more wind up you generate in the backswing. This results in a powerful uncoiling in the downswing generating substantial power into the back of the ball. The effect is similar to wrapping an elastic band around your finger. The more tightly you wind it the faster it unwinds. A good mental image to achieve this goal is to imagine you are standing in a barrel of cement. Your legs and hips are thus restricted in their movement. Now focus on turning your back fully to the target. This will create a powerful shoulder turn on top of a limited hip turn. You will create massive distance gains with this single tip alone.

Tip # 6 – Widen Your Stance, Retain Flex in Right Knee

In order to generate strong club head speed, you need a stable base to ensure it is correctly delivered to the back of the ball. Ensure the inside of your insteps are outside the width of your shoulders. To ensure the correct distance apart simply hang two clubs vertically from the outside of both shoulders. The club heads should be directly over the insteps in both feet.

Tip # 7 – Retain Flex in Right Knee

A critical element in the creation of a powerful golf swing is the retention of flex in the right knee in the back swing. If your right knee straightens it’s like snapping the tension in the swing and all your power is immediately destroyed. A good tip is to bend the right knee and tilt it slightly in towards the ball. Focus on retaining this inward tilt throughout the back swing.

With practice you will build muscle memory and these swing changes will become a habit that will not require any conscious effort to execute. In the immortal words of John Daly “Grip it and Rip it.”

One of the most important things to remember if you want to learn how to chip better is just how important it is to have clean, consistent contact. You will need to strike the ball on the way down, avoiding hitting the ground before you hit the ball. Repeating clean contact is not easy, but once you can do it you will quickly find it much easier to control the distance of your chips. Once you learn that distance control you will be able to putt from closer distances, cutting strokes off of your game.

Ball Alignment

While you are swinging a golf club, the middle of your center of gravity is where the lowest point typically falls. Because you want to avoid hitting the ground before you strike the ball, you should move the ball just behind center at address. For beginners, use two inches behind your center, then you can adjust as you become more comfortable. Just don’t forget to keep this ball location consistent as moving it will change the angle of your club impact and you will find it harder to consistently strike the ball cleanly.

Hand Position

You will need to work on consistent hand position each time you chip. Your hands should be in the same place with each chip you make. You will want to position your hands in front of the ball. Draw a straight line from the point where your right knuckle sticks out the farthest. That line typically falls just in front of your ball and is a good reference point to use for your hand positioning.

Weight Balance

Your weight should be distributed about 40 percent-60 percent with more of your weight on your front foot. This is going to help cut down on hitting fat shots by making the lower point of the swing more toward your front foot. Getting this balance down will help you to your goal of hitting clean chip shots more consistently.

Club Alignment

Make an extra effort to keep your club face squared to your target. While playing the ball back in your stance your club face may float open, which requires that extra bit of focus for chipping.

Reading greens is one of the hardest skills in golf to master. Even if you have perfected your putting stroke and distance control, you will end up missing the target most of the time if you are having problems reading greens. The ability to effectively read greens is more of an art then a science. Sure, it involves the laws of physics, but without instruments available to take accurate measurements, we’re back to the art of guessing.

Reading greens can be broken up into the following components:

Slope of the Green

During your approach survey the entire area of the green along with the immediate surrounding areas. This perspective allows you get a great idea on the general slope of the green. Take note of what the overall contours are like. Is the green basically flat or does it have ridges, valleys or multiple tiers? Once on the green, you can identify the more subtle contours of the green itself.

The slope and contours on a green determine the path a ball will take while obeying the laws of gravity. On a side slope the ball with always turn towards the lowest point. On a downhill putt the ball needs to be struck with less momentum. This causes gravity to act upon the ball sooner along its path towards the hole. So for downhill putts we need to allow for more break. Uphill putts are much easier because they have less break. This is due to the increase in momentum of the strike required to hit the ball up the hill. With the increase in momentum, the ball will roll through much of the break.

Ground Condition

You can get a good indication regarding the condition of the green while walking on it. If the green feels wet and soft it tells you that the pace of the green is going to be slow, so you will need to hit your putts a little firmer. If the green is dry and hard it tells you that the green will be faster and you will not have to strike the ball as firm. Remember for a faster green, you need to account for more borrow. ”<em>The faster the green (downhill) = less momentum = more break'</em> and ‘<em>The slower the green (uphill) = more momentum = less break</em>.’

The Grain

Grain refers to the direction in which the blades of grass grow. The way the grain runs on the putting green can have a significant impact on the speed and borrow of your putts. One method in determining the grain of the green is by looking at the sheen or color of the grass. A shiny sheen or light color indicates the grain is with you (putting down grain). A dull sheen or darker color indicates the grain is against you.

The grain dictates the amount of resistance placed on the ball as it rolls. Speed will increase going down grain but the amount of break will lessen. Speed will decrease going into the grain but increase the amount of break.

Check the line from all Angles

It is a good idea to look at the putt from at least three sides: behind the ball, behind the hole, and the low side of the hole. These three looks give your mind the best information on the break of the putt.

When reading a green, you will get a more accurate picture when you are standing in a lower area looking uphill. Check from the side of the green if you have an uphill or downhill putt. This provides the best perspective for determining the speed of the ball. Behind the ball is the best place to take a final look.

Envision the Path

Never hit the ball until you have formed a vision of the path the ball will travel. Your goal is to visualize your putt as a straight line because the slope of the green is what will make your ball curve. Pick out a spot that represents the apex of the break, now to reach this point, just try to putt your ball over a spot three inches in front of your ball.

Finally, do not make your stroke until you have the best read you can get and then commit to it. It can be disastrous if you begin to second -guess yourself while your taking your stroke.

Final Thoughts

Good green reading comes with experience. After putting over enough different greens, you will develop a sixth sense of how the ball will roll.

Here are several of our favorite golf slice practice drills to use on the driving range to help cure your golf slice instantly!

Golf Slice Tee Drill

Benefits

Helps corrects slices caused by OUT-IN swings and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.

Steps

1. Place two tees and a golf ball right to left diagonally (think of tic tac toe) with a tee in the upper right quadrant, your golf ball in the middle and another tee in the lower left quadrant.  Make sure to leave about four inches of spacing from each tee to the golf ball.
2. Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.
3. Your goal is to hit the ball crisply without hitting either of the tees.

This golf slice drill is helpful because it forces you to take the proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path to impact.  A common cause of the golf slice is to cut across the golf ball with an OUT-TO-IN golf swing (also known as “over the top”) which can put clockwise spin on the ball and send the ball left to right.  With the “golf slice tee drill” if you swing OUT-TO-IN you will hit the first and/or second tee.

Golf Slice “Right Foot Back”

This golf slice drill helps correct also encourages the proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.

Steps

1. Use a 7-iron and a teed up golf ball and perform this practice drill at half speed.
2. Take narrow stance, then place your right foot back one foot.
3. Make sure to swing along IN – TO – SQUARE – TO – IN wing path and make solid ball contact.
4. As you begin to hit solid golf shots, bring your right foot back even with your left foot and hit golf shots without the tee.

The Truth about how to correct a golf slice

nearly all advice given to fix your golf slice is incorrect. By that, I’m also referencing numerous professionals who have probably cured their personal golf slice.

Personally, I’m not a pro – I’m actually not even really good. Nevertheless, I’m going to teach you a technique that, should you keep in mind and implement, will fix your golf slice every time.

Definition of a Golf Slice

This is almost a absurd question, since I doubt many of you are reading this without having experienced a slice. Nonetheless, bear with me.

You have hit a slice when the golf ball starts travelling a single path and then curves towards right (for any right-handed golfer) while in the air. Put simply, the golf ball may well begin by flying still left of, straight at, or right of your intended target. Nonetheless, during flight, the ball will veer to the right (again, for any right-handed golfer).

It isn’t a slice when the ball simply flies directly to the right!

Golf Slice Cause

A golfswing is quite complex and, consequently, frustrating. Nevertheless, the cause of the golf slice is comparatively easy, as there’s only 1 cause.

In case you routinely hit a golf slice, it is invariably because your swing is “outside-in”.

Picture a top or a ball spinning on the floor. In case you wanted to keep it spinning, you may possibly use your hand and ‘swipe’ the top or ball in the direction that it is currently spinning. You would NOT use your hand to hit the top or ball this kind of that the impact was straight At the top or ball. A slice is caused by the exact same general ‘swiping’ motion. The golf club head has ‘swiped’ the golf ball rather than hitting immediately at and through the golf ball, thereby causing the golf ball to spin.

Focus on your follow-through! Invariably, if you are hitting a slice, the simplest method to fix it really is to make sure that you simply end your swing with your shoulders square to your hips and together with your hands (and the golf club) either directly in front of you or else to your right a little. I think that the least complicated method to recognize this is purely to take a bit of time next time you might be at the driving range and attempt to conclude with your hands further and further to your right. Rather than thinking about finishing with the golf club pointed back above your left shoulder (which is how numerous men and women picture the conclusion of their swing), picture finishing with the club pointed back over your right shoulder.
