3. What the slice boils down to in reality is simply a lack of squaring the club with the ball. So you need a great finish to square the club with the ball correctly. A good drill to try is to take an 8-iron and tee up.

Swing it back to waist height, cock the club up, and then pull towards your left. You should be aiming to hit the ball about 50 yards. Be sure to make your chest and belt buckle face your target.

4. But what if your problem is a bit worse than above? You are hitting big banana slices. You must square the club to the ball earlier. What you should do is draw a yard long straight line in the sand in a bunker.

Take a 5 iron or 6 iron and swing the club above the line. Try to get your divot to start at the line and go forward. Keep trying until you can hit at least 10 shots in a row that start at the line.

5. Often one’s slice can be eliminated, only to come back stronger than ever. Don’t worry; there are tips for this too. Head on over to the driving range. There you can find hills that place the ball slightly above your feet.

While knowing why you slice is nice, it doesn’t help correct it. Nor does it help you cut strokes from your golf handicap. What you need is golf tips on how to correct a slice. Below are six key golf tips on turning your slice into a draw.

Starts At Address

Turning your slice into a draw starts at address. Golfers fighting a slice tend to lean away from the ball. It’s a natural reaction. But it makes your slice worse. At address, your weight should be balanced in every direction. It also should be evenly distributed over both feet and proportionally on the balls and heels of your feet. This position prepares you to make a good golf swing.

Tilt Away From The Target

Also, tilt your shoulders away from the target at address as well. This lowers your back shoulder, which is key. Golfers struggling with a slice tend to invert their shoulders at address. Which you hit depends on whether the clubface is closed or open. Also, you can move your head forward on the downswing. But not so far forward that your head gets out in front of the ball. Keep your head behind the ball.

Rotate Your Arms

If you’re a slicer, you probably don’t rotate your hands properly on the downswing. The way to square a clubface at impact is to continually close it through the downswing. If you stop closing the clubface and start sliding, the face will open and you’ll slice more. As you make the backswing, concentrate on rolling your clubface open. Then, as begin your downswing, roll your hands over and straight out in front of you as they cross your sternum.

Extend Your Arms

Extending your arms after impact closes the clubface and prevents a slice-inducing swing at impact. What is a slice?

A slice occurs when you hit a shot, and it spins off to the right.  (to the left for lefties).  This often occurs when the club face is open, and the path of the golf club comes from the wrong angle.  This usually happens when your club is on an outside-to-inside path as the club nears the ball.  If your clubface is open while on that outside-to-inside path, the slice can be extreme!

How to correct your golf slice

It’s one thing to know what is happening.  How are you going to fix it?

We have a few quick tests that will help you correct your golf slice.

1.  The Rope Test — when your hands are at the top of your backswing, imagine that you are holding a rope that is attached to a tree straight in front of you.  Now your object is to pull the rope straight down.  As you begin the downswing, you want that same straight down motion.  This will force your right elbow to stay close to your body, and prevent you from going “outside-in” with your swing motion.

2.  The Box test — Get a long, skinny box, and lay it on the ground.  You will be hitting the end of the box with your driver.  Your goal is to make the box go straight in front of you.  If you hit the end of the box and it goes to the right or the left, than your swing is off.  This is a good way to test new enhancements to your swing if you can’t make it to the driving range.

3.  The Tennis test — If you’ve ever tried to put topspin on a tennis ball, you know that you have to turn over the racket as you hit the ball.  This same rolling of the wrists needs to happen when you hit a golf ball.  As you are impacting the ball, make sure that your right hand ends up on top of your left hand.  Just as you want that to happen in tennis to get topspin, your goal in striking a golf shot is to roll the hands.  When you roll the hands over properly, you can be sure that you are closing the face of the club, when will severely decrease the likelihood of a slice.

Golf Slice Cure Tip #1 – Try to keep your leading shoulder “down” on the ball through impact.  This is called staying strong through impact. Lots of times the leading shoulder (left shoulder if right handed) flies up before impact. Now just for a minute, think about what that does to the club head when it’s in the impact zone.

Golf is all about thinking and analyzing your shots to get better. A huge part of this game is understanding “why” you’re getting a certain result, and the physics behind that result. Thinking through your golf swing will provide huge dividends if you’re willing to invest the time it takes.

Get up from the computer and actually go though the motions slowly. Let your leading shoulder fly up as you approach impact and you’ll actually be able feel and see the clubface coming from an outside-in path. That causes a slice every time.

So what can you do to correct it? Well, as I said before, try to learn to keep your leading shoulder strong. Keep that shoulder “down” on the ball all the way through impact, even after the ball is gone and flying straight down the fairway.

 

Golf Slice Cure Tip #2 – Initiate The Downswing With Your Arms.  I’m sure that’s the exact opposite of what you’ve heard before. Starting the downswing with the arms is a tough thing to do.  You want the ball to go the maximum possible distance. So subconsciously, many people have the problem of letting their body get way ahead of their hands. That’s the number one slice-producing move among golfers today. It’s probably the toughest one to fix, because when you’re at the top of your backswing, all you can think about is crushing the ball.

Instead of thinking maximum distance, think minimize slice. Start the downswing with your arms. Get to the top of your backswing, and then the first move should be with the arms. Put this move together with keeping the leading shoulder down, and it will do wonders for both your woods and your irons.

 If you look at any of the really good players, you will see that they actually initiate the downswing by “pulling” the club down with their arms.  They do NOT start the downswing by twisting the chest towards the target.  That is a very important distinction to make.

To fix the golf slice, the golfer should first ensure that he or she is properly aligned toward the target with hips, shoulders and feet all square to the target line.  Second, the golfer should ensure that the swing path taken is more in-to-out or in-to-square-to –in rather than out-in.  Third, the golfer should ensure a neutral golf grip position and a square clubface at impact.

Practice Drills to Fix the Golf Slice

To fix the golf slice, top PGA teaching professionals recommend practice drills that help incorporate the proper golf swing mechanics into the golf swing and ingrain the correct “feeling” of a well-executed golf shot.  Here are several of the most popular practice drills to fix the golf slice.

SLICE TEE DRILL

Corrects slices caused by OUT-IN swings and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.

• Place two tees and ball right to left diagonally, creating an IN-SQUARE-IN swing path. Allow about 4″x 4″ spacing from each tee to ball.

• Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.

• Hit ball crisply without hitting tees.

BACK TO TARGET DRILL

Encourages IN-SQUARE-IN swing path and club release.

• Perform drill half-speed with 7-iron and teed ball.

• Select target and assume normal setup.

• Leaving arms in position and club face square to target, rotate feet 45° with back directed toward target.

• Swing along body line and hit 5 to 10 shots.
