Golf Swing Basics – The Process of Golf

Golf Swing Basics – The Process of Golf

Article by Harris Franks

The game of golf is learned in small and simple steps one at a time. There is no such thing as a perfect golf game. It is not learned in a day, a week, a month or even a year. It takes years and years of practice to perfect the golf swing basics. This is what makes it a beautiful game, it will always challenge you to improve. Every course provides a different set of challenges and no one has the same golf swing. To make quicker progress in the game, there are a few important tips that will reduce your handicap. Some golfers overlook the simple elements of golf, this is why they become increasingly frustrated with the game. Here is what I’ve found has helped me with my game. You must keep these three really important steps in mind the whole time you are playing.

Keep your head still – any slight movement will cause you to move your eyes away from the ball and this will cause you to not make full contact with the ball.Keep your club head traveling in a straight line while in contact with the ball – Seems simple, but don’t put too much power into your swing otherwise this will cause your muscles to tense up and will cause the club head to move out of line with hitting the ball.Relax your muscles – if your muscles are tense then this will cause you to divert all the energy needed for your swing away from it.If you’re head is still then your eyes stay on the ball. It may seem the most simple thing but you have to see what you’re trying to hit! A lot of my friends have been surprised at how effective this simple step improves their golf swing basics. You can spend ages trying to find a golf slice cure but all you simply need to do is to keep your club head travelling in a straight line while it’s in contact with the ball. It really is that simple. In order to achieve a straight line with your club head you just need to relax. You may think this sounds easy to do but in reality, if you’re not confident with your swing then you tend to tense up. If you just focus on relaxing your muscles before, during and after your swing then your confidence in it will increase. Relaxation will also help your balance. You must stand comfortably so you can reach the ball easily. The muscles which twist the body around will add force to your swing. So it is really important that you keep your arms relaxed.Learning golf swing basics can be a very fun and rewarding process and you shouldn’t let little obstacles distract you from achieving it.

Unique Golf Gifts For The Holiday Golfer

Unique Golf Gifts For The Holiday Golfer

Article by Chris A Smith

If you have a golfer on your gift list, make this the year you give him or her an unique golf gift. Actually, it’s more a perfect golf gift than unique. Do you know what it is?

Ask any golfer what they would like as a gift for the holidays. They may come back with a dozen different answers but at the heart of it, they all want the same thing. The golfer who absolutely needs a new driver to cure his slice, wants the same thing as the golfer who needs to start making those three foot putts and believes he has to have a new putter.

What they both want is a better golf game.

There’s an old adage about amateur golf that says all bad shots can be blamed on the equipment. The logical follow up to that is the fastest way to improve your game is to buy new equipment. Now that’s great news for club manufacturers, but in reality, it does nothing for the golfer.

If your golfer friend has a bad swing, or doesn’t know the fundamentals, he or she is doomed to continue to play badly regardless of what piece of equipment you give them.

Do you know what would turn that around?

Lessons. Another old adage that I am personally way to familiar with is “When all else fails, read the instructions”. Most amateur golfers had never had a lesson. They picked up the club and tried to copy what they saw on TV or their buddy or on the range or whatever. The net result is that there are some really unique, if not effective, golf swings out there.

You could be their saving grace. You could be the person that finally allows them to win a bet or two. Your gift will not be forgotten.

So where do you get these golf lessons. Almost every golf course has a teaching pro or two. Typically you can get gift certificates and then let your golfer work out the time that suits him or her best. Lessons from a pro are the best way to go but they are pricey and will typically run to 0 an hour for individual lessons.

The alternative can work just as well if your golfer puts their mind to it. The internet is full of DVDs and e books that will effectively walk him through all the different swings and strategies. These products are significantly more affordable and are obviously more convenient.

So this holiday forget the new golf towel or 12 piece divot repair tool and give your golfer something that will make their game truly better. Give him lessons.

Sound and Feel Mizuno JPX 800 Irons- Perfect golf clubs

Sound and Feel Mizuno JPX 800 Irons- Perfect golf clubs

Having said goodbye to the MX series this year, Mizuno had the new JPX series waiting in the wings to fill the game improvement gap. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to review the new Mizuno JPX 800 Irons, since they deliver outstanding sound and feel, which help Mizuno win popularity. Read on to find more about the irons.

Much Praised Look and Feel

Though distance and forgiveness were key design goals/intentions, Mizuno’s engineers didn’t forget what has made them so popular – that much praised sound and feel. They are a big jump into the game improvement category for Mizuno Golf.To achieve their high standard for these qualities, Modal Analysis and Harmonic Impact Technology was used to tune everything to perfection. As a side note, you may not be aware, but the other major contributor to the sound and feel is the Grain Flow Forging process, proving that this quality is a consideration from the very beginning.

]]>

Unique Metallurgical Savvy

The fact is simply that Mizuno, like several other companies, have figured that alpha maraging steel makes a hotter iron face than does titanium. An iron’s face does not allow enough space for the spring-like effect to take place with titanium. It takes a driver or an over-sized fairway metal in order for that to happen. Mizuno, whose metallurgical savvy has been well known for years, have come up with a super hot alpha maraging steel alloy, and found a way to poind it so thin that the face has noi choice but to act like a spring on impact. Whether you buy into the hype of “Max COR Technology” or not, the fact remains that the science behind it is very good, and that Mizuno has found a way to make their JPX 800 Irons faces thinner, and thus springier.

From Mizuno

The JPX-800 is an iron specifically designed to be amazingly forgiving and explosively long. The unbelievable distance of the irons is achieved by combining MAX COR Technology, Hot Metal™ Face construction, and an exotic pocket cavity to hit the maximum allowable limits for energy transfer, far exceeding previous Mizuno irons, and the competition.

An aggressive triple cut sole ensures solid ball striking from all types of lies, and a multi-material cavity badge provides tuned impact sound with enhanced feel and sharp looks. The JPX 800 Irons utilize the world’s most advanced game improvement technologies to help the serious mid to high-handicap player score like never before.

Overall, these irons are the new flagship of Mizuno, for they boast all the unique features of the brand. If you have used Mizuno golf clubs and feel great about them, these irons will be a great choice to replace your previous clubs.

Perfect Your Golf Swing Alignment

Perfect Your Golf Swing Alignment

Article by Brad Myers

If you ask the players on the PGA Tour to name what they believe to be the most important golf fundamentals, there is no doubt that golf swing alignment would be towards the top of the list. However, most amateurs either do not know or do not admit how important golf swing alignment is to their success.

It is amazing how you always have certain things that stick with you that you have heard from your different instructors. On the topic of golf swing alignment, one of my old instructors used to say.You can have the biggest and boldest cannon and it does not mean anything to you if it is not aimed in the correct direction.. There are many sayings that I am sure that you have heard along these lines. Obviously, you can hit the perfect golf shot but if it is aimed 30 yards to the left of the target the results are not going to be to your liking.

Since golf swing alignment is a main fundamental to each and every golf shot, here are some simple exercises that you can quickly and easily do to check your golf swing alignment.

First, setup to a golf shot as you normally would and make sure you are comfortable. Now that you are ready to make your golf swing, place a tee directly behind each of your heels and push both tees all the way into the ground. Now move away from your setup and place a club.s shaft over both of the tees to create a straight line. Now, go behind your ball and look down the target line. Does it match what you thought?

This golf alignment exercise shows you exactly where you are aligning your feet. If your pictures do not match, then you can simply change or move the tees so they align correctly and then setup with the tees touching the back of your heels. If you were not aligned properly, do not be surprised that when you setup to your next shot with your heels properly placed that you will feel that you are aimed somewhere else. If your feet have been aligned incorrectly for a while, then it will feel quite strange when you do align them correctly. Keeping track of your alignment, your new feet position will become second nature in no time at all.

Another easy way to check your alignment is to assume your address position, remove your left hand from the club and simply point to a spot 10 yards to the left (for a right-handed golfer) of your target. Monitor where your arm and finger are pointing opposed to where your shoulders and hips are pointing. They should feel like they are creating a straight line. If you feel they are pointing to the left then you are prone to hit a push or a hook. If pointing to the right, you are prone to hit a pull or a slice.

As the PGA Tour players would agree, your golf swing alignment is one of the most important golf fundamentals for each golf shot that you take. You must check it often, because it’s very easy to align yourself incorrectly without even knowing it. That is why I would be surprised if you were on driving range at a PGA Tour stop and did not see several players with clubs on the ground to assist with their golf swing alignment. Now that you know exactly what you need to do to check your golf swing alignment, you should be hitting more golf shots at your target and lowering your scores.

The Joy Of A Golf Cart

The Joy Of A Golf Cart

Article by Julee Mitchelsin

You are going to love to read this article in search of some valuable instruction in the mystery of the perfect golf cart. But I doubt you are going to find what you are expecting. What I am going to do is give you some advice that will hopefully help you in your game but more in the head game than in the physical part of the game. I want to in the next few paragraphs talk about three truisms that will hopefully put you at ease, steel your confidence, and allow you to play up to your ability. The three areas are rhythm, routine, and consistency.

When I talk about rhythm in relation to the golf cart I mean pace of cart play AND peace in your thought. Most people have heard of the evils of hurrying a cart or of deceleration, but what about rushing your mental game or losing your concentration. First have this one swing thought in mind as you step to the ball–“smooth carts produce better rides, I don’t have to drive slowly.” This allows you to have something for your mind to latch onto in that critical moment as you stand over the ball in front of your cart. It is easy to produce and isn’t complicated or distracting.

Secondly you need to have a routine. The golf course is not the place to be thinking about the mechanics of curing your slice or cutting or drawing the ball. You have to be concentrated on the best type of shot to hit, NOT how to hit it. All of that work should be done on the range. Routine refers to the natural sequence of events that goes into envisioning the shot that you want to hit, selecting the club, and choosing the golf cart that you will use to get yourself around the course. The routine is very much a part of the rhythm of your game and allows you to find a level of “been there, done that” comfort that is so helpful to your confidence.

The last thing is consistency, and this requires discipline and time. The mechanics of the golf cart are important, sure, but the consistency of the cart is ten times more important. If you have a natural slice but you know how to use is and can trust that it is going to go in a certain way you are way better off than if you hit the ball straight 80% of the time and don’t know what is going to happen the other 20%. You can also trust your cart to get you to your shots even when they are in the deep rough.

So instead of filling your mind with all the intricacies of the newest hybrid carts and trying to always have the best, find your natural fit in a golf cart and make it consistent. Then work on the part of the game that has a lot more to do with your score, the head game, and finding the calming and confidence building influences of rhythm and routine.

The Advantages of Using Golf Practice Mats

The Advantages of Using Golf Practice Mats

Article by Trevor Lee

Golf Practice Mats have short pile, grass-like nylon fibers to withstand the repetitive striking motion of a golf club without losing any performance characteristics. This makes them perfect for driving ranges, practice tees, educational institutions, golf courses or at home. Whether it is for indoor or outdoor use, the golf mats are portable and can be modified for optimum Golf Swing Training.

The attractive, all weather green golf mats, can add style and fun to any golfer’s office or family room. Molded from high impact polymers, the patented design makes installation a snap. Feel the solid surface under foot. Watch the ball track straight to the hole and disappear into the cup. The Golf Matswill deliver hours of fun and practice for the entire family. Now weather is never going to be an issue with your own golf mat, only your motivation to improve. Practice in your living room, garage, yard or driveway, at the office or in your hotel room with your golf mat. Golf mats can be easily transported anywhere.

By using Golf Training Mats, you can become a better golf player, as you can practice anytime, anywhere and in any weather condition because practice makes perfect. Golf mats help you in the following:

Cure that banana sliceCure that snap hookStop topping the ballStop hitting it fatStop standing too close to the ballStop standing too far from the ballLearn to hit a power fadeLearn to hit a power drawGet more distance on your shotsDevelop muscle memoryDevelop consistency in your strokeLower your score

To install the golf mat in your yard you just have to follow the instructions. Perhaps the easiest method is to simply mow the grass in the area where you want to install your mat and place the platforms directly on the grass. After a few days the grass under the platforms will die and the mat will settle into the landscape. If a less than perfect soil setting is chosen a 1′ base of crushed shell followed by a ½’ of sand will create a very solid base for the platforms. The panels are designed to flow over the existing or created contours of the yard but on a flat surface the mat will putt dead straight.

You can also leave the Mat outside as the material used in both the platforms and the putting surface is designed to withstand the exterior elements. But it is more preferable that you roll up the turf and take it indoors if prolonged severe weather is forecasted. If any time you desire to change the place of the mat that you have already installed then simply take the green apart and re-install it at a new location of your choice.

The Essentials to Know when Buying Golf Clubs

The Essentials to Know when Buying Golf Clubs

If you are fairly new to the game, or just new to actually going out and purchasing a club on your own, read through our quick golf club buying guide. It is sure to set you straight on what you need to know about buying the perfect golf club for your needs.

What kind of golf clubs do you have to choose from?
First, let’s take a look at the types of golf clubs that make up a set. Typically, a golfer carries fourteen or fewer clubs in his or her bag. The four basic types of these golf clubs are Woods, Irons, Wedges, and Putters.

Another popular type of golf club nowadays is the Hybrid club. The Hybrid club is a cross between the Iron and the Wood, and is made for people who have difficulty using these other types of clubs. But before you get confused, let’s break these categories down a bit and take a closer look at them.

Woods:
Woods are usually used to hit long golf shots. Standard woods that are carried in a golf bag are 1, 3, and 5 Woods. Your 1 Wood is typically your driver. As the number of your wood increases (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) you lose the amount of distance it can go, but you gain a higher trajectory. Recent golf club technology has made higher lofted woods for shorter distances.

Irons:
Iron clubs are mostly used for shots that are expected to go an average distance – typically from 125 to 200 yards. The lower the number of iron, the less degree on the face of the iron – resulting in the longer amount of distance the ball can go. On the other hand, the higher the number of iron, the higher the degree on the face of the iron – resulting in the higher the loft a ball has.

The most popular irons used are 3 Irons though 9 Irons, however, many companies also manufacture 1 Irons as well as 10 Irons.

Wedges:
Wedges are used for semi-short golfshots. They are also used for chipping, and sand shots. There are several types of Wedges, including sand wedges, pitching wedges, and lob wedges.

Putters:
If you have ever watched a golfer up on the green, trying to hit a short shot into the hole, then he or she was most likely using a putter. A putter is a golf club that has a low loft. This enables the ball to roll father. A putter is typically shorter than all of your other golf clubs.

Should you buy new or used clubs?
Now that you understand a little bit more about your golf clubs, you must decide whether you want to purchase a new or used set. If you are fairly inexperienced, you may lean towards buying used clubs, instead of spending a great deal of money on a new purchase. However, when buying used clubs you should be wary about defects such as cracked shafts or worn grips. After all, these things will certainly not help you learn the game the right way. And, they may accumulate into worse money problems in the end.

Our advice to anyone starting off new to the game of golf, is to invest in a new set that works right with your height and build. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive set – but simply something that you can learn well on.

Should you purchase a complete set or put one together on your own?
One thing you should realize when putting together a golf set by yourself is that it will be a more expensive route to take then simply buying a set that is already put together. Putting together your own set can be quite confusing if you are merely a beginner. Our advice for starters is to get a complete starter set and go from there.

If you have leftover money, you may be better off to spend it on some golf lessons. Leave the picking and choosing to more advanced players who know exactly what they want.

In closing, have fun with your new golf clubs. Use them to learn how to excel in this challenging and entertaining game!

Picking the Right Golf Driver For You!

Picking the Right Golf Driver For You!

Article by Rick Hart

Are you getting the most out of your driver. I don’t mean just distance but a good balance of distance and accuracy. There are many factors that effect how well your driver performs for you. Lets take a look at those factors and how to get the best driver for your game.

Sure the new drivers have created a lot of excitement. Massive 460cc head sizes and new high tech shafts mean you can get more distance and accuracy than ever for your tee ball. But, unless you get the correct loft and shaft flex you may not be getting the most out of these new high-tech, high-priced wonders. To do that you need to know your clubhead swing speed. Why do you need to know your clubhead speed? Here’s the scoop.

First, something has changed in the game in the last 10 years. The development and wide acceptance of the new two-piece balls with their lower spin rates has meant that your driver loft may need to change. During the 80s and 90s people assumed that the lower the driver loft the farther the ball would go. It was not uncommon to see drivers for good amateur players in the 7-9 degree range.

What the golf scientists have found is that in order to maximize distance with the new low-spin balls, the clubhead needs to launch the ball at higher angles than in the past. This means that many of us are probably playing drivers with too little loft. Driver loft should match your swing speed. The slower your swing speed the more loft you should have. If your average swing speed is between 80 and 90 m.p.h. (the average for most male golfers) you should be using a driver with about 12 degrees of loft. Combined with the new balls this means your launch angle and spin rate will be optimized. So the good news is this means you have a real chance of adding some distance to your drives.

How much distance can you gain?Tom Wishon in his great book The Search for the Perfect Golf Club points out that…

For a 90 m.p.h. swing speed a driver with a 9 degree loft will launch the ball at a 10.5 degree launch angle and the ball will carry 206 yards. An 11 degree driver will launch the ball at 12.1 degree angle and the ball will carry 211 yards.A 13 degree driver will launch the ball at 13.7 degrees and the ball will carry 213 yards. The difference between 9 and 13 degrees is 7 yards.

For slower swing speeds, Wishon points out the added distance can be as much as 16 yards just by choosing the correct loft. At a typical woman’s swing speed of 60 m.p.h. the optimum driver loft would be 19 degrees and could mean a distance increase of 16 yards.

The correct shaft flex is just as important. A shaft that is too stiff for your swing speed will generally cause the ball to be low, short and to the right. Sound familiar. The fact is many of us play with shafts that are too stiff. If your swing speed is less than 100 m.p.h. and you are playing with a stiff shaft you’re probably losing distance and accuracy.

Another big factor is shaft length. Sure the longer the shaft the higher the clubhead speed. However there is a point of diminishing returns. If we can’t control the ball then we may find the extra yardage won’t help our games. Ten more yards into the woods is not the answer. There’s no worse feeling than not knowing where your drives are going.

As Frank Thomas, former technical guru for the USGA, points out, “…you can have more confidence in your swing by using a shorter shafted driver… you will swing better, have improved timing and gain all the distance you would achieve by using a longer shaft, which may not be so accurate.” What he’s saying is you’ll hit the ball with the sweet spot more often and that always means more distance and better accuracy than the alternative.

So don’t plunk down those big bucks on new driver until you know a little more about your game. With a little bit of swing analysis you’ll maximize your investment and maximize your drives too.
