You read up on it. You become sure you can do it. After all, hitting a good tee shot seems a lot harder than casting a spinning rod.So you march to the lake with visions of hooking and landing a faraway lunker. You set up your fishing rod and step up to the bank and cast. Your lure, however, flies off to the right and not very far. You cast again and again. The results don’t change.

Golf didn’t seem this frustrating! So you think all you need is some practice.

But after hours and hours of it, you’re still in the same, going-nowhere casting boat, so to speak.

How discouraging! Even makes you think about giving up fishing.

Yes, I know!

But instead of giving up, I wondered, what if there’s a lot more to casting a spinning rod than what I read? What if I experiment with using other techniques, the techniques of throwing a ball and of casting a fly rod?

So I began a year of casting trials and errors. Lots of errors!

Then finally it happened: consistently, I felt the beauty of loading the rod, of watching the lure streak over the water, and land right where I wanted it to.

Here’s how I got there.

THE STANCE. I want to use one that helps me shift my weight so I get as much leverage as possible, and helps me increase the length of my casting stroke, and therefore the bend, or load, in the rod. I’m right handed, so I put my left foot forward and point it straight ahead. I turn my right foot outward about thirty degrees. My feet are shoulder-width apart. The front of my right foot is in-line with the front of my left heel. (If my right foot is too far back or too far pointed outward, I’ll lock my hips and not be able to fully rotate by body and shift all my weight.) I square my hips and shoulders to the target, slightly bend my knees and shift my weight to the ball of my front foot. My right heel is off the ground. I flex my thumb and put it on the top of the rod handle. I hold the rod loosely and point it anywhere from nine o’clock to ten-thirty. My elbow is even with the front of my waist. The lure hangs down about a foot.THE POWER GRIP. I start with two fingers in front of the reel stem and two behind. I pick up the line with my right index finger, and then move my hand back so only my line finger is in front of the stem. Next, I pull the line up and back, then press my fingertip against the stem, but not against the line. (I like to feel the weight of the lure to cast it accurately.)

I hold the line this way for the same reason a good fly caster doesn’t let slack form in his fly line: to keep constant tension on the line so as soon as I start the cast the lure pulls on the rod, and therefore fully loads the rod. Holding the line the conventional way made it impossible for me to keep enough tension on the line. Even worse, I found it very difficult to keep my index finger from prematurely straightening and releasing the line.No wonder my casts were short, and high and off to the side.

(Until I got my timing down, I used a golf glove or a Band-Aid to prevent the line from cutting into my finger.)

MOVING THE ROD. I initially assumed the faster I moved the rod the farther I’d cast. For two reasons I was wrong. First: a pitcher achieves maximum power and velocity only when his arm moves in sync with his body rotation. If his arm gets ahead of his body he becomes an “arm thrower.”

No wonder major league pitchers seem to throw as if not using all their might! Maximum arm speed is reached only at the release.Fly casters will tell you the same thing, and also for the second reason: to fully load the rod it must accelerate. If it moves too quickly the speed of the line, or in our case the lure, moves almost as fast as the rod, and therefore doesn’t fully pull on and load the rod. The cast dies well short of its target.

(A stiffer rod loads better with a shorter, faster stroke, but the stroke must still be accelerated.)

THE CAST AND POWER SNAP. I begin the cast by opening the bail, raising my elbow and slowly accelerating the rod up and back. As I move the rod, I rotate my shoulders backwards and shift my weight to the heel of my back foot. When the rod points to about one o’clock I break my wrist back. My elbow continues to point forward. (If it points out to the side, I’ll not be able finish the cast without lowering the rod tip from the target line, and prematurely unloading the rod.) When my forearm points to about one o’clock, and my upper arm points parallel to the water or slightly upward, and the rod points parallel to the water or slightly downward, I immediately and quickly start my forward cast.

(During the back cast I never move the rod too fast. If I do, the lure will bounce at the end of the cast and prematurely unload the rod.)

My eyes are focused on an imaginary target in the sky, about forty-five degrees above the water, but higher if the wind is from behind or lower if it is from in front.Leading with my elbow, rotating my shoulders and shoulders I accelerate the rod and soon move the tip in a straight line that points to the target and move the rod butt at a right angle to the line. (Fully rotating our hips and shoulders allows us to increase the length we can move-and therefore load-the rod at this angle.)When my arm is about three-quarters extended, I increase my grip pressure and my acceleration and shift all my weight to my front foot. I reach maximum arm speed then, as if I’m hammering a nail, I snap my wrist without lowering the rod tip from the target line.

Abruptly, I stop the rod.My front leg is now straight. My right shoulder is all the way forward. My arm is fully extended. My weight is on the ball and toes of my front foot. I hold the rod still so I don’t lower the tip and pull the line down.

AS I DESCRIBE ALL THIS. Learning to cast a spinning rod seems a lot easier than it was. Well maybe if, like most skilled golfers, I had learned the right techniques from the start it would’ve been.But better late than never.

My driver has always been the club that I have been most confident with. In order to drive the golf ball properly, you must first master the fundamentals of the swing.

When setting up to hit a drive, stand with your feet slightly greater than shoulder length apart, in an athletic stance, with your knees bent. The ball should be teed up in alignment with the inside of your left foot (for right handed golfers). Stand so that you do not need to reach too far in order for the clubface to be lined up with the ball. Your back should be slightly bent at an angle relative to your legs.

In order to consistently have a clean tee shot, don’t try to kill the ball! I see so many beginners walk up to the tee box, and swing at the ball with all their might. Usually the ball will end up sharply slicing or hooking, in either case, loosing a considerable amount of distance. Take a nice easy swing, especially on the backswing. Also, bring the club back so that it is parallel to the ground at the top of the backswing. It may even help to take a three quarter length swing to ensure that your club remains on the correct swing path.

Remember that most of your power will come from your torso; not your arms. It is therefore crucial to be conscious of keeping your swing in rhythm with you weight shift. Just like when hitting a baseball, your weight should shift from your back foot to your front foot as contact is being made with the ball.

Also, be sure to follow through completely. Do not try to stop the club right after making contact, as much power will be lost. When finishing, your left (front) food should still be planted onto the ground, and your body should be facing the target.

But instead of giving up, I wondered, what if there’s a lot more to casting a spinning rod than what I read? What if I experiment with using other techniques, the techniques of throwing a ball and of casting a fly rod?

So I began a year of casting trials and errors. Lots of errors!

Then finally it happened: consistently, I felt the beauty of loading the rod, of watching the lure streak over the water, and land right where I wanted it to.

Here’s how I got there.

If you are a complete beginner or novice to golf, this article will definitely lead you to a place where starting and taking the first step becomes easy. Many golfers who have great potential fail to progress and for some that entails even making the greens. They key to having a fantastic golf career either professional or leisure is to overcome the inertia to transcend to the next level from the previous. With some expert, informative and useful advice, that step becomes all the easier.

The foundational steps of golf involves balance, power and driving, addressing the ball, grip, and finally putting (shot techniques will be covered in a different article). Below are these steps elucidated in more detail: 

Balance:

 For a golf swing that maintains consistency and power, balance is the primary underlying element which must be maintained throughout the entire swinging motion. The first step is to position one’s posture such that the centre of gravity is centred over the ball. Subsequently, one’s feet should be apart as far as the shoulder’s width with a slight bend at the hip area (hip tilt of about 30 degrees or one “o’clock” upper torso position) with rear protruding a little; knees at this point should be mildly locked. Next, both hands should grip the club in such a way that they are in line with one’s chin and this should all culminate in natural distribution of weight over the golf ball. The bend is one of the most crucial components of the balance position. One should not feel as though he/she is “sitting” comfortably which would imply the shifting of bodyweight towards the heels of the feet. The latter would stiffen one’s body rendering flexibility impossible with the subsequent swing inevitably be wayward.       

At the time of impact, approximately seventy five percent of one’s weight should be transferred onto the leading foot (ie left foot for right handers and vice versa). One’s head must be behind the ball and hips should be c 10cm forward vis-a-vis the initial position. Consequently, the spine is tilted to double that of the starting stance. Post impact, following the gradual motion of the body, weight shift should naturally flow back towards the heel.

Power and Driving:

The greatest problem faced by beginner golfers in driving the golf ball is that of power. Below are some pointers and steps to follow and check to ensure a great dynamic drive-through:

– Making sure the ball is not teed-up to low. This has become more of a problem of late because the contact surface of drivers (especially iron 1) have pronouncedly increased. This results in greater difficulty in locating the sweet-spot which in relative terms have shrunk. As an approximation, the ball should be teed such that the top half of the golf ball is above the club face when the club is in a stationary position on the ground. This would ensure that the contact point is on the centre of the club head. Evidently the larger club head, the higher the tee.

– Making sure one’s hands are not position too closely to the body in the starting position. This mistake would invariantly produce a smaller arc in terms of backswing and follow-through. The key is not reach-in slightly and not to overdo it; this is easier said than done and requires practice because the natural tendency for beginners is too hang one’s hangs inward for security and comfort. Following the circumference of the semi-circle driving motion will generate quicker and more powerful drives then a path trending across the diameter of the motion-arc.   

– Many beginners lift their front foot on the backswing. This inadvertently leads to a counter-productive weight shift to the front of the backswing resulting in a hook or shank nine times out of ten instead of a drive. One’s front foot should be firmly anchored to the ground on backswing forcing the hip and shoulder to turn in s spring-like fashion releasing great power. One’s weight should be shifted to the backside post impact.

– Accompanying the tee is the ball position. Setting the ball too far back or front would lead to premature contact on the down swing or delayed impact of the golf club after traversing the mid point below the golfer’s chin. It will be near an impossible task to hit a good drive if the above occurs. A perfect position would be the ball equidistance from both feet.

– Lastly, confidence and mental approach to a drive is vital for beginners. Every single shot should be hit with full believe that the drive would go the distance and not stop short of its intended target.

 Addressing the golf ball

Ball addressing entails contacting the ball so the square of one’s club head is exactly perpendicular to the ball on impact. The same swing applies regardless of whether one is on the driving range, tee or fairway; this applies for all woods and irons from 2 through to 9.

The tip post following the steps above is to keep one’s head down and one’s eye on the spot where the ball sits. One’s head should be in this position throughout the swing. Head lifting and movements during the swing or looking up as the club hits the ball would pull one’s body out of alignment making it almost impossible to hit the ball squarely.

The Golf Grip

is one’s only means of connecting with the club. A sound grip is half the battle won in regards to generating power and accuracy. Wrist swerve is then the main power source and a common mistake by beginners is to grip the club more in the palm than through the fingers. Using our sensitive fingers increases wrist hinging and this produces better tee shots and puts.

One other common error amongst even the most experienced golfers is a flimsy lead-hand (left for right-handers) grip concentrated in the palm. Consequently, the golf ball is sliced rather than hit. Here are some check points:

– the club should be held alot more by the fingers than the palm.

– the golf club should be resting on the base of the little finger and contact the index finger just above the first joint.

– Post positioning the club on the fingers, one’s thumb should be parallel (in touch and pointing outwards toward the club face) to the shaft of the club.

– Finally, the knuckles of the index and middle fingers should be visible when looking from the top onto the lead hand. There should also be a “V” shape created by the thumb and index forefinger of the lead hand with its tip directing toward the other hand and shoulder.

Putting

This is the finest and most intricate part about golf play and involves finally coaxing the ball into the golf hole. In a sentence, putting is all about feel and touch. That said, putting is also a little more innovative in respect to the golfer compared with any other shot. There are innumerable styles of putting because whatever consistently puts is whatever works for the individual. The process is much less important in this part of the game.

By and large though, general principles are as follows:

– Putters should be ultra comfortable in terms of length and lie angle

– Gripping during putting should be slightly different compared to driving, chipping, slicing or teeing. The golf club should usually sit in the hollow of the palm of the lead hand with the thumb of the other resting across (as opposed to straight) the shaft.

– Ball position should be towards the forward heel with toes parallel to the target hole. One’s eyes should be over the ball in order to aim and ascertain accurately the line of sight in alignment with the putt.

– Judging the putter path is something which is very hard to teach and narrate. However, one that travels a little inside on the back stroke and then down the line on the forward motion usually works wonder. On the backstroke, one has to ensure that the putter face remains square and does not fray wide open.

– Post putting with the non-lead hand, revert to putting practice using both hands however making strokes with grip pressure mainly on the non-lead palm.  

The preliminary steps above should be able to get any rookie up and running at least onto the range and short games…the rest comes with heaps and heaps of club time always keeping the fundamental rules in mind.

One of the most common golf flight faults encountered by golfers is to “slice” the golf ball.  To identify if you are slicing the golf ball, check out your ball flight.  For right handed golfers, a golf slice occurs when the golf ball starts left of the target and then curves right of the target (often far right of the target)!

Golf Slice Tee Drill

Benefits

Helps corrects slices caused by OUT-IN swings and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.

Steps

1. Place two tees and a golf ball right to left diagonally (think of tic tac toe) with a tee in the upper right quadrant, your golf ball in the middle and another tee in the lower left quadrant.  Make sure to leave about four inches of spacing from each tee to the golf ball.
2. Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.
3. Your goal is to hit the ball crisply without hitting either of the tees.

This golf slice drill is helpful because it forces you to take the proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path to impact.  A common cause of the golf slice is to cut across the golf ball with an OUT-TO-IN golf swing (also known as “over the top”) which can put clockwise spin on the ball and send the ball left to right.  With the “golf slice tee drill” if you swing OUT-TO-IN you will hit the first and/or second tee.

Golf Slice “Right Foot Back”

Steps

1. Use a 7-iron and a teed up golf ball and perform this practice drill at half speed.
2. Take narrow stance, then place your right foot back one foot.
3. Make sure to swing along IN – TO – SQUARE – TO – IN wing path and make solid ball contact.
4. As you begin to hit solid golf shots, bring your right foot back even with your left foot and hit golf shots without the tee.

How to improve your golf swing address is very important. You will be amazed how your golf swings will improve by correcting your posture or spinal alignment, your stance or address, and the strengthening of your muscles and supporting tissues around the joints of the bones.

I will get straight to the point. Place your legs into position as you would do in readiness to strike the golf ball. Bend your knees. Lean onto the right foot while removing the weight from yor left foot. If you find yourself unsteady shift your foot slightly until you find your balance point. Once you have found it stay there until you feel stable. Leave your right foot where it is; then lean to the left foot, remove the weight off the right foot and repeat. You will now recognize and discover your balance stance.

Pick up your golf club positioning your legs according to your newly discovered balanced stance. As you position the golf club in your hands pretending to swing, it will feel differently. The reason is you have not been in your correct address and not able to hit the ball correctly and drive it the desired distance.

You probably already know that if you have been out of alignment you will need to retrain, but the rewards will outweigh the effort. It is better to strike the golf ball correctly, than to keep adjusting or compensating your golf swing to make it happen poorly.

When your spine is out of alignment and you are holding the golf club forward the body tends to lean backwards to maintain balance in order to compensate for the golf club being held too far forward. If the golf club is being held too closely then your body tends to lean forward with some spinal arching. In both instances golf swing difficulties will arise while trying to hit the golf ball.

While practicing my balance maneuver without the golf club, it was surprising how out of balance I became, but once I had my feet in their correct position, then my balance improved. I pretended to swing my golf club and discovered that I needed to incorporate some twist exercises to afford more flexibility and stretch in my upper back and waistline.

I picked up my golf club to do my practice swing and it defintely felt different. So I am back to the drawing board to correct my golf swings. Correct posture or spinal alignment does make a tremendous difference in the mechanics of the golf swing.

You may have noticed that when you held yor golf club to check out your new stance there was an added pull across the shoulders; and when you followed through you may have also noticed that your twist was a bit tight from the waistline and up.

By maintaining correct spinal alignment and exercising upper back, arms, and wrists for stronger muscle control, you will discover a big improvement in the distance and the speed of the golf ball.

As you improve the muscle strength of the upper back, arms and wrists, also include exercises to stretch the joints. Consider the joints as being similar to rubber bands. These rubber bands need to lengthen and be able to keep up with the increased muscle strength.

Picture yourself a few weeks from now having developed improved adjustments of the golf swing mechanics. Tempo, speed, distance, swing plane, and golf swing sequences will be changing causing you to reanalyze your golf swings. But these improvements will make you a better than average golfer.

A golf swing slice can be very frustrating for the passionate golfer. To improve your game and lower your scores it is very critical and important to know how to correct a slice and fix it as fast as possible. If you really want to better your game and fix your slice then read on and use these 3 tips and techniques.

The first tip I would like to show you is the easiest one. Simply film yourself or ask a friend of yours to film you. Do your swing and after your training session have a look at the movie and analyse your moves. This is very helpful and you can see what went wrong with your golf slice. Like I said, it is simple and funny too.

Let us go on with the next tip. You need a good stance to stop slicing. Your shoulders have to be up and aligned to the ball or target. The right foot has to be pointed straight ahead and your left foot slightly to the left. Such a stance can make big difference to your game. A proper golf stance can lower your scores and your golf swing slice will be fixed quite fast.

The third tip I would like to give to you is a proper golf backswing and downswing. A proper backswing has to be a smooth move and starts with your arms and then the shoulders. Keep your eyes on the ball. Downswing is followed with the hips and arms. Again keep your eyes on the ball and do a proper golf swing.

3. When you buy clubs you have to consider the shafts and the materials. This depends on your needs like height, weight and swing speed. There are quite a few more factors you have to take care of.

Tips for Correcting a Slice in Your Golf Swing

Here we’re going to discuss one of the most common issues with the golf swing… the dreaded golf slice. There are seemingly countless issues that can led to slicing in the the golf swing, and we’ll discuss some time-tested corrections that can help you get rid of that slice in your golf swing.

Address

One of the most frequent causes of the slice happens during address. Most golfers prefer a square stance at address, where the feet, hips, and shoulders are in line with the target. If you move your left foot too far forward, the club face is likely to open at impact and the ball will fly to the right. The left foot should be directly under the left shoulder.The same holds true for the shoulders and hips. Unless they too are square at impact, the ball will not fly straight and true. Your body must be in complete alignment and totally square to the ball when the club hits the ball. That’s the first step…

Grip

The next step is correcting the grip. Many newer players grasp the club too tightly, which can cause the club head to open as it strikes the ball. Again, this will make the ball fly to the right. If the grip is too loose, the head will wobble at impact and that, too, can lead to slicing or hooking.There are several different types of grips, but to cure the slice in your golf swing, start with a neutral grip. It works for the majority of golfers, and it’s a good base to start and it’s easier to make adjustments from a totally neutral position. To check that your grip is neutral: you should be able to see two or three of your left-hand knuckles. If you cannot see any knuckles at all, this is a sign of an improper grip. As your hands come back into the hitting zone, they will rotate to a neutral position, causing the face to open.Rotate your hands—not the club, just your hands—until you see a couple of knuckles. Try hitting a few balls using this new grip. Keep in mind that minor adjustments to your grip can go a long way. Keep working at it until you discover the right position for you. Once you have it, remember it!

Tempo

When correcting a slice, swing tempo is important. Many golfers have a tendency to try to use their arms as their power source to get some extra yards, but this almost never works. Once they get to the top of their backswing, they allow their hands to take over and lead the downswing. As the hands come down, with everything else following, the club face will almost undoubtedly open. From start to finish, your swing should be smooth and relaxed. Avoid the temptation to jerk the club once you get to the top of your backswing. Let your hips start the downswing and everything else will follow.

Above all, correcting a slice is a matter of finding the one or two things you are doing wrong and fixing them. This, of course, takes time and patience. If you work through the possible causes, you will eventually find the solution, and your enjoyment of the game will soar to new levels.

Like any golf strategy, correcting a slice is a process. By working your way through the possible culprits, you will eventually find the cause of your problem. Here are some time-tested tips on correcting a slice.
