Greg Norman has been made to climb down on his pre-President Cup statement that Tiger Woods did not deserve his TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons Steel in the United State team. Since the solid deafeat of his Internationals, that previous statement has been forgotten. The man who, in his hey day as the World No 1 was known as ‘The great White Shark’, admits that Woods stepped up to the plate at Royal Melbourne, is suggesting that he is on the way back and has expressed the hope that the 21st Century’s greatest golfer will soon return to being the old rampaging Tiger who bestrode World golf like a Colossus. We all know what it’s like to go through the ins and outs of the game. “You want to see the player who dominated the game come back so that when you beat him you feel like you beat him at the top of his TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons Steel.” Norman, along with many other critics, believed that the former World No 1’s form during his past two years simply did not warrant him a place in the 12-man US team ahead of fast-rising young stars of the calibre of Keegen Bradly, whose victory in the PGA championship made him the only American to win a major this year. But the magic he created in his year’s of greartness have not been forgotten and if his galleries remain as large as ever, I would have to say that it is because they are there in the hope of seeing TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons Steel greatests magician rediscover himelf. Naturally the galleries will dwindle if and when they get tired of waiting, but in the meamtime, he is producing enough sparkle in between a little too much splutter to suggest that while he’s not there yet, it may not be too long before he is.

The most demanding aspect about August National is the absence of flat lies, with it’s sloping landscape and bikini waxed greens, you will encounter one of the most challenging tests of iron play on the planet!

To help you master your iron golf swing and thus improve your enjoyment of this great game of golf, let us go through some of Augusta National’s toughest iron shots and explain how to execute them properly. If you already strike your iron shots perfectly every time, then use these tips on solid iron play as a course guide while you watch the Masters on TV. With the right kind of practice along with a good fundamental understanding of what constitutes a solid iron game, you CAN build a great iron game just like the pros!

Draw On #16 The 16th hole at Augusta is often the deciding factor on who will win the Masters. Perhaps the most dramatic moment ever on the 16th hole at Augusta is of Jack Nicklaus hitting a pure iron shot he nearly holed out on his way to his sixth Masters victory in 1986. What makes Nicklaus’ accomplishment on the 16th hole so incredible was the Sunday pin placement. Because the hole was placed in the back left corner of the green, this called for Nicklaus to shape his iron shot from right to left, a draw was never one of Nicklaus’ strong suits. However, like all the great golfers of the past, Nicklaus knew how to execute a draw when he really needed to. It’s also interesting to note while Nicklaus came through with birdies on 16 in ’75 and ’86 on his way to victory, others who struggled to hit a draw (see David Duval) lost their chance to win The Masters on this hole. Mastering the Draw: Since the vast majority of amateur golfers fight a slice, the idea of hitting a draw seems daunting at best. However, there are really only two simple factors that must be present to produce a right-to-left ballflight: the golf club must attack from a slightly inside-out path and the club face must be free to rotate on plane through impact. A good way to visualize this path is to imagine the club hitting the ball on the inside quadrant closest to the golfer. This visual will help the club stay behind your body longer during the downswing, allowing the correct path into impact.

Another good way to visualize the proper path is to imagine the club staying behind the hands while approaching impact. This prevents you from starting the downswing with your shoulders and arms during the downswing and keeps the club swinging on the proper plane. One last thing to remember is it’s much easier to draw the ball off the tee than it is off the ground. Be like Jack Nicklaus’ and always put the ball on a tee whenever possible, even on the par-3s.

Your right leg needs to be strong and like some kind of Greek pillar, but relaxed.

Be sure you swing at it easier than normal when it’s windy. You can produce negative effects on your ball trajectory by hitting too hard when it’s windy. Remember what Greg Norman said, “swing easy into the breezy.” It’s easy to think that you need more force when the wind is working against you. Remember: not everything can be solved with force. Swinging easy helps you to maintain control over the ball. Wind can feel good, sure, but don’t let it take you down the wrong path. You can improve your golf swing in a number of different ways. The old days of the unfit golfer have gone for ever .Even if you are just a social golfer doing simple routines that will improve your game make sense.

The golf strengthening and conditioning exercises I am going to give you on this page will improve your game and have you feeling fitter and stronger.

The game of golf is now played in a much more athletic way then is was in the past. Players like Tiger Woods and Greg Norman have brought athleticism and fitness to the game. The routines in the gym that modern players like Tiger and Greg use have proven to be just as important as the time they spend practising on course.

Along with some gym exercises I am also going to give you some great stretching exercises that you can do at home or the office.

 I will start with the all time best stretching exercises for Golfers.

 

 Stretch 1: The Oblique Twist

 

STEP 1: Sit down and slowly lower your back on to the ground until you are as fat as a pancake. Put your hands out directly from your shoulders to form a t shape, then lower them a little so your hands are pointing about 1 foot wide of your feet.

STEP 2: Raise your legs up whilst keeping your torso completely still, and then lower both legs to one side of your body. The key thing is to keep your upper body quite straight and rigid, as this will strengthen your obliques.

STEP 3: Simply lift your legs back up to the centre position and then lower down again to the other side.

By holding, your legs in the centre position for 30 or 40 seconds each time you will further strengthen your core.

Think about this exercise and then think about the motion your body goes through when you are hitting a shot. The twist with each golf shot put pressure on the obliques so strengthening them up has to make sense.

 

Stretch 2: The Oblique push down

 

STEP 1: Lie flat on your back and then bend your knees in towards your buttocks. Lock your fingers and place them behind your neck. like you are about to do a sit up.

STEP 2: Twist your left shoulder towards your left knee until the middle part of your back begins to lift off the floor. Twist until you feel a strain on your abdominals and hold for about 20 seconds.

STEP 3: Return back to your starting position and repeat on the other side.

 

Dumbbell Exercises

 

 Exercise one: Wrist Grip Power

 

STEP 1: Grab a dumbbell with each hand that is light and grip tightly, then hold each weight down against your sides. Lift both weights upward until your elbows are at 90 degrees and hold for 5 seconds.

STEP 2: Whilst tensing your arms and forearms simply twist your wrists at the same time in and then out.

As simple as this exercise sounds it will strengthen you wrists quickly and give you more control when chipping and driving.

 Exercise Two: Stance Power

This exercise will strengthen your quads and your hamstrings, which both play a role when you drive a golf ball.

STEP 1: Stand with your feet shoulder length apart, and hold the same light pair of dumbbells. Lower the dumbbells down against your sides about 10 centimetres wide from your thighs.

STEP 2: Bend down at your knees and stabilize, then spring up into the air. Land down in the knees bent position when you come down and repeat for 20 repetitions.

Over the next few days, I will detail a number of additional golfing stretches and weight routines. The main muscle groups that we will cover in the routines are the hamstrings,glutes,quadriceps,trapezius,triceps,abdominals and the rectus.

Using the exercises described above with the additional ones that I would publish shortly about three times a week will improve your power and endurance quickly.
