Three Top Tips To Help You Lower Your Golf Handicap

Three Top Tips To Help You Lower Your Golf Handicap

Article by John Woosey

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of an amateur golfer’s playing ability. It allows players of different skill levels to play each other on a fair scale.

Quite often when meeting a fellow golf enthusiast you’ll be met with the question “What’s your handicap?” Hopefully you won’t embarrass yourself by stating a high handicap but even if your handicap is a bit on the large size there’s no need to worry.

Many golfers go years without seeing massive improvements in their handicap. Essentially you need to think of your handicap score as something that reflects your skills and abilities in general, not the last one or ten rounds you’ve played.

Practicing your wedge shots

Wedge shots whether they are for final approaches to the green or the dreaded bunker recoveries are vital to any golfer’s game. Many golfers are aiming simply to get the ball on the green but if you were to take into consideration the lie of the green you would be able to see which places are likely to give you the easiest putts to finish the hole.

Sand shots are a nightmare for many novice golfers, however using the wedge’s face to your advantage is key to a successful recovery. By standing square to the ball and leaning slightly on your front foot, getting the leading edge of your wedge under the ball should lift the ball high and clear of the steep back wall of the bunker.

Analyse your own swing

Knowing what you are doing wrong is half the battle with golf, taking practice swings or practicing at a driving range can really help you get a better understanding of what your natural shot is like. Some people are lucky and their natural shot is straight as an arrow, for those who hook or fade their shots off to one side by slowly going through your swing or stopping just where you would strike the ball you may find your hands have rotated.

If your hands have rotated that is what will probably be causing your mis-fired shots. Have a look at the position of your clubs face, if it’s opened or closed too much then try rotating your wrists. If it remains a troublesome aspect of your swing then perhaps the grip needs altering so you can swing perfectly and comfortably too.

Reduce your putts

There are many pros that struggle with this part of their short game and it can equal heartbreak in nail-biting finishes to games. Putting is another area where you basically need to practice to get a feel for the right weight to put into your shots.

Practicing from different distances and especially on different gradients should give you a good idea of the power needed to put the ball away in one shot, two at most. It’s advised that your back swing should always be shorter than your follow through as this is what essentially gives the ball it’s thrust towards the hole, the rocking motion of your shoulders should lead your arms, hands and putter through the entire motion and make sure you keep an even grip on the putter throughout the swing.

These three tips are common to many golfers’ short-comings but are all curable to help lower your handicap.

How To Correct Your Golf Slice

How To Correct Your Golf Slice

Golf can be a frustrating game.  Today we’re going to analyze one of the most frustrating parts of the game: The golf slice. We’ll also show you how you can correct your golf slice.

What’s happening:

Golfers are slamming their clubs on the ground, uttering four-letter words and having a miserable time on the tee-box!  Why?  Because they are slicing the ball!  If this is happening to you, you aren’t alone.  Golf slices are a big problem for most golfers.

What is a slice?

A slice occurs when you hit a shot, and it spins off to the right.  (to the left for lefties).  This often occurs when the club face is open, and the path of the golf club comes from the wrong angle.  This usually happens when your club is on an outside-to-inside path as the club nears the ball.  If your clubface is open while on that outside-to-inside path, the slice can be extreme!

How to correct your golf slice

It’s one thing to know what is happening.  How are you going to fix it?

We have a few quick tests that will help you correct your golf slice.

1.  The Rope Test — when your hands are at the top of your backswing, imagine that you are holding a rope that is attached to a tree straight in front of you.  Now your object is to pull the rope straight down.  As you begin the downswing, you want that same straight down motion.  This will force your right elbow to stay close to your body, and prevent you from going “outside-in” with your swing motion.

2.  The Box test — Get a long, skinny box, and lay it on the ground.  You will be hitting the end of the box with your driver.  Your goal is to make the box go straight in front of you.  If you hit the end of the box and it goes to the right or the left, than your swing is off.  This is a good way to test new enhancements to your swing if you can’t make it to the driving range.

3.  The Tennis test — If you’ve ever tried to put topspin on a tennis ball, you know that you have to turn over the racket as you hit the ball.  This same rolling of the wrists needs to happen when you hit a golf ball.  As you are impacting the ball, make sure that your right hand ends up on top of your left hand.  Just as you want that to happen in tennis to get topspin, your goal in striking a golf shot is to roll the hands.  When you roll the hands over properly, you can be sure that you are closing the face of the club, when will severely decrease the likelihood of a slice.

Hopefully these tests gleaned from years of experience by golf professionals, can help you to correct your golf slice.

I have a number of additional tips that can significantly improve your game. Many people have found these to be extremely helpful in getting rid of the dreaded slice, so please check them out below!

Read Greens Like The Pros

Read Greens Like The Pros

Putting is a combination of the mind, reading and execution. I have maintained my 12 handicap over the last twenty years simply by increasing my prowess on the green, while age has negatively impacted most of the other parts of my game. This article deals with the second aspect of the putting triad, reading greens.

A golf green is like a book, not a sentence. If you are on a strange course and didn’t take a couple minutes on the practice green, it is like you are opening up a mystery novel at chapter 14 instead of the first page. That’s fine if you want to learn the “plot” during the next few chapters/greens, but your score and countenance will reflect your early confusion.

Let us assume that you took a little time on the practice green before assaulting the course. Do not try to fix flaws in your putting technique during your few minutes practicing. Instead, determine two things:

1) The speed of the green (stimp)
2) How much the ball breaks at that green speed.

So instead of concentrating on draining putts, get a solid feel for the speed. Try various distances along with uphill, downhill and side hill. Remember how much your ball breaks on your regular course. The amount of break for the same grade on a different course is linear with the difference in speed.

Example: If you have to putt 20% softer on this different course, your ball will break 20% more for a given length of putt. Why? Gravity has that much more time to pull your ball downhill because you had to hit it slower. A ten-inch break on your home course will now break twelve inches.

Ok, we are on the course and you have hit the green with your approach shot. As you walk toward the green, take in the whole scene. Greens are built to shed water, not to hold it and have water pool every time the green is watered or when it rains. There is a scheme to remove water from all greens. Look over the whole green to see where to water will run off. This can be more than one place. Hint: On hilly or mountainous courses, 95% of the time water will flow away from the hill.

If there is a pond, stream, etc. near the green, the water run-off scheme will almost always be designed to allow water to eventually drain to it. Ever hear the phrase, “Breaks toward the water”?

Greens are also generally built to make us feel good, so most will have a slant toward the tee box in order to better hold approach shots. Beware of the slope of the green near greenside bunkers. There will normally be some slope away from the bunker for a distance.

Now you are on the green and “reading”. I always walk all the way up the line, read from behind the hole, then walk down the other side of the line and read from behind the ball towards the hole. Your feet and balance during this trek will tell you more than any other thing. If I have any questions remaining, I have no problem trampling right up my line to get a better feel. Let us be honest. When is that last time a footprint deflected your ball?

Hopefully one or more of the other players in your group will have to putt before you. Caution: All putting strokes are different. Some players cut the ball, some hook, some bounce or backspin, some decelerate. But watching all these putts will help you. It doesn’t matter if they are on your line or not. The most value you get will be watching what happens to their balls around the hole. Example: If someone putts well off your line and the ball slows quickly, his putt was uphill and yours will have to break toward him at the hole.

Other terrific clues to help you determine the slant of the green along your line are background structures and terrain. Look for houses, lakes, ocean, and horizon. All of these are true to the world.

Early in the day, you may still have dew on the greens for several holes, even after they were mowed. The marks left in the dew by previous putts will help to some extent. You will not be able to tell if these putts were blown by the hole in many cases, so just get the trend from the marks.

We need to address grain of the grass. My opinion of grain: Most announcers love to talk about it on TV because it is a nuance that most amateurs don’t think about, care about or know much about. The announcers talk about it like newscasters hype hot stories. The problem is, the more attention you pay to grain, the less attention you pay to factors that actually mean something. When you begin to get helped by dealing with the grain, join the Hooters Tour.

Should you play the wind? Unless it is howling, wind is a very minor factor influencing your ball on the green. Put your hand down next to the green to prove to yourself how much the wind on your face gets knocked down all the way down to the ground. I think you will find the effect will always be less than one inch along a twenty-foot putt.

All of these factors are going to work on your subconscious and you will generally develop a “gut feel”. As I talked about in a preceding article, you must not discount this feeling. You can read the green. Begin your focus immediately following your approach shot to the green. Use all the clues and believe in your skill. You CAN read greens!

Smashing It Straight

Smashing It Straight

Some players drive the ball 250 yards or more every time, but they can’t keep it on the fairway. The harder they try to stay on the fairway, the more they hook it. As a result, they find themselves in a clump of trees or under a bush, without a good second shot, hurting their golf handicap. They’ve taken golf lessons and read golf tips. And they’ve tried throttling back. But they still can’t cure their big hook.

If that’s you, read on. There’s a simple way to cure the problem. All you have to do is make a minor change in your grip—one pioneered by golfing great Ben Hogan. The change takes a little getting used to, as most adjustments do, so you’ll have to hit a few buckets of balls to get comfortable with it. But once you do, you’ll hit the ball straighter than before with just as much power. And you’ll shave strokes off your golf handicap.

A Smasher’s Instinct

Hogan had a smasher’s instinct. When he was on the tee, the right-hander didn’t want to just drive the ball well. He wanted to crush it. He wanted to hit it out of sight. And for a small guy, he hit it a long way. But like many big hitters, Hogan had problems with direction. Whenever he tried to throttle back, he just made things worse. Throttling back just wasn’t in his nature.

But a simple change in his grip transformed him from Captain Hook to Captain Power Fade. Hogan realized that by weakening his grip a bit, he could control his hook and still hit the ball as hard as he wanted. Rather than fight a strong, three-knuckle grip, he decided to change grips. He turned his left hand so that he only saw one knuckle at address while his right palm faced the target. The change let him smash the ball without hooking it.

The change was exactly what Hogan needed. It transformed his game. By the time he retired in 1971, he was not only one of the most feared golfers of his time, he also one of the best of all time. After turning pro in 1929, he won 64 PGA Tour championships. Of these, nine were major championship wins—4 masters, 2 U.S Opens, 1 British Open, and 2 PGA Championships.

Strong Forearms Helped

Keep in mind though that Hogan had very strong forearms. They allowed him to take a weak grip and still square the clubhead at impact. If you don’t have strong forearms, you may want to adjust your grip so that you see one and one-half knuckles on your left hand at address. Then place your right hand on the club so that the palm is facing the target, like Hogan did.

Like most changes, this new grip takes getting used to. Hit balls on the practice range with the grip before trying it on the course. You’ll probably slice a few before getting the hang of it. But the more you let your right side in the swing, if you’re right-handed, the smaller the slice will be. Vice versa for left-handers. And since you can’t hook it, swing as aggressively as you like. You’ll still hit a fade. And you’ll probably still end up on the fairway.

Henry Cotton’s Tire Drill

To get used to hitting the ball with a weak left-handed grip, try one of Henry Cotton’s favorite drills. Cotton was a great player and teacher. He got his students used to hitting with a weak left-handed grip by having them hit an old tire. Here’s how:

Grab an old iron. Grip it with your left hand, so that no more than one and one-half knuckles show. Lay the tire down where you’d tee the ball. Now take some swings with your left arm only. If you’re left-handed, use your right arm.

How can you tell if you’re closing the clubface when you hit the tire? Don’t worry, you’ll know. If the clubface is closed, you’ll feel solid contact. If it’s open, you’ll feel an extra shock in your arm. Use this drill sparingly to prevent injury. You don’t want to injure yourself during a practice session.

Mastering this change in grip conquers the hook for big hitters. Of course, taking a few golf lessons and reading golf tips can’t hurt, either. But the change in grip is something you can do right now. Just have a little patience. The change feels strange at first, but once assimilated, it helps lower golf handicaps. It also puts the fun back in driving the ball.

When you go for a custom-fitting session, as I did yesterday, at Titleist’s state-of-the art facility at St Ives Golf Club, it’s important to ideally bring your ‘A game’ to the bay (or as near as possible) so the clubs you’re planning to use, can compliment your current swing.

Obviously faults can creep in but PGA-trained fitter Richard Harries gave me a tip he always used in the early part of his amateur career Callaway FT I-Bird Irons helps to square the shoulders at address and reduces the risk of them opening up to the target as you grip the club, forcing a tendency to slice.

He recommends: “As a right-hander I was always encouraged to grip the club with the left hand and place the clubhead behind the ball, with my right hand behind my back.

“This way, the teaching pro watching from down the line, could see the correct position of the inside of my left elbow with my shoulders square to the target. Step two is to then bring in the right hand on to the grip from underneath the shaft and into position.

“TaylorMade Burner Plus Irons helps retain the shoulders in a square position, as opposed to immediately putting the right hand on top of the grip and tending to force the shoulders open.” Hopefully it’s a tip that will work for you, too and immediately reduce the chances of that destructive out-to-in swingpath which can cause the dreaded slice.

Experts said Joe’s swing was ugly – too wide with toes at right angles to his target (instead of slightly splayed) – and that he got himself airborne at impact. But boy was it effective. And he used the massive power and momentum he generated in his follow through to launch the ball consistently long against allcomers, using a Krank Golf Rage drive to deliver a ball speed of 225 mph.

In the final he met 16-year-old American Joe Mazza, with his far more orthodox golf swing, but the youngster was no match for Miller. As the huge stadium crowd held their breath Miller blasted his tee shot down the right centre and it looked to be heading just out of bounds until TaylorMade R7 Draw Irons took a ‘members’ bounce’ left and rolled out to the 410 yard marker.

Mazza could only reply with a drive of 371 yards, enabling Miller to claim the 0,000 winner’s cheque. “I don’t know what to say,” said an almost speechless Miller. “I came together in my last round and got a great bounce to the left to stay in bounds. It is a dream come true.”
