It’s Never Too Late To Become A Surfer Dude

It’s Never Too Late To Become A Surfer Dude

Article by Simon Hillier

A few months ago, a friend called to ask if I’d like to join her on a surfing lesson at Manly Beach in Sydney. Giving thought to my answer, two images flashed to mind. My thirty-nine year old battle weary body, attempting to hang five with a gaggle of bewildered foreign backpackers and pointing school kids. And more vividly, the look on the faces of my settled couple and married-with-kids friends if they knew I was even considering the idea.

Having recently broken out of Sydney’s Lower North Shore maximum suburbia and moved to the fun-filled northern beaches, I had already become a prime suspect in their case against dirty-thirties attempting to recapture lost youth. It wasn’t that I’d been caught driving a red convertible sports car or acting suspiciously outside Botox clinics. However, I had been hauled into Fresco painted living rooms and interrogated under the glare of designer mood lighting over alleged mixed touch football games on weekends, bar hopping on school nights, and clubbing on any night, sternly warned that such activities were not something a self-respecting man of my age should be involved in.

“Sure, count me in” I replied. Breaking the news to the fun police couldn’t be any more embarrassing than having to answer the question asked of every male living in a beachside suburb, “So do you surf?” with a mumbled reply about body bashing in a pair of flippers. Besides, one lesson was hardly a commitment. It was like a speed date. I’d hook up with a few boards, share some laughs, make a fool of myself, and never be seen again.

The day arrived, and everything seemed to be was going to plan. Paddle out, thrash about like a puppet on amphetamines, catch a wave, attempt to stand shakily, fall off comically, try to laugh at ones self louder than at those around you, and start again. At this rate, I’d be back in the safety of the pub in no time, telling those who asked, “Yeah, I used to surf until I wiped out on a submerged German and did my back in.”

Then the most bizarre thing happened. After landing one particularly kind wave and staggering to my feet, the regulation left hook that had sent me crashing to the canvas all day never arrived. I was still standing, surfing right over the top of the remaining backpackers, while the school kids didn’t even register a bump!

There was no denying my giant esky lid was about the size of the QEII, and would have remained stable with an entire Central African government onboard, however, gliding across water with the sun on my face, salt on my lips, and sand in my shorts left me exhilarated in a way no Sunday night happy hour ever had. By the end of the lesson I knew that somewhere in a surf shop out there, a shapely piece of fibreglass was calling my name. From an early age, I’d always loved Sydney beaches. Face-planting on a sandbank after catching a ‘dumpa’; having to “do a runner” across the “ouch, ouch, ouch” hot sand until we found a place to drop our towels; waiting ravenously in the shop line for a chocolate Paddle Pop and a pie n’ sauce with the sensation of course damp sand under my feet, and scent of salt caking bodies under my nose; the golden tanned girls who, well, just walked around being golden tanned girls. My transcendental surfing lesson aboard the HMAS Polystyrene left me wondering, “Why didn’t I try this years ago?”

Amongst a list of very lame excuses, only one seemed to have any validity. Fear. As a teenager without a car, it had been less frightening to stand in the local nets and watch cricket balls fly towards my face, or attempt, and often fail, to jump BMX bikes over 5ft ditches, than let golden tanned girls see me hanging out at the beach with mum and dad.

In my twenties, I was building a career, travelling the world, and discovering that there was more to a female’s beauty than the shade of her tan. By this time my parents were permitted to accompany me in public, however, the thought of prehistoric man-eaters licking their lips underneath my bobbing sea biscuit, and tales of 120kg Neanderthals performing surfboard proctology on anyone who accidentally took their wave, ensured the closest I came to the thrills of surfing was through the eyes of a six o’clock sports news camera.

After the lesson I realised how irrational these fears had been. I’d seen dozens of board riders emerge from the sea every day. They all still had their torsos, and very few walked as if they had a surfboard stuck in their backsides. Never again would I allow an issue outside of my control to prevent me from living out my surfing dream!

Which meant I’d need a more tangible fear. It came to me just after the smirking surf shop grommet had taken my money and watched me leave with eight feet of fiberglass, a rubber suit, two packets of golden tan bikini girl board wax, and his sunglasses stand wrapped in my leg rope. Maybe my sensible friends were right after all? Perhaps I was pathetically holding on to a long lost youth?

Coyly making my way down the beach, I felt the stares of beach dwellers boring into me, knowing exactly what they were thinking. A voice came over the lifesaver club speakers. No-one ever understands those announcements, but I heard it clearly, “You, the thirty-nine year old bloke in the hysterically fitted wetsuit. Act your age. Put down the surfboard and move back between the flags. Nice and slow.” Just as I thought the game was up, I took one last look at the lapping water and realised I’d come to far to stop now. Mustering every ounce of courage in my entertaining frame, I clutched my board like a swagman with his tucker-bag and yelled, “You’ll never catch me alive”, crashing into the sea, leaving the world of epochlitically correct troopers in my wake.

I’ve been honing my paltry surfing skills for a while now and still find myself upside down more often than not, but it doesn’t matter. As any golf hacker will tell you, one sweet drive down the middle of a long straight fairway redeems 99 slices into the car park and dribbles off the end of the tee. Just give me one smooth ride on a glistening blue satin-sheet wave, overflowing champagne froth in my wake, and not a backpacker to be seen between my board and the beach, and this middle-aged delinquent will always be back for more. Because the only thing that scares me these days is imagining what life would be like if I’d never become a surfer dude.

Four things every late starter should know about surfing:

1.Physiological studies have demonstrated that surfing is an excellent form of exercise. An aerobic fitness study at Deakin University found that competitive surfers rate comparable to Nordic skiers and distance runners, whilst my study found it reduced budding man-boobs and wobbly love handles.

2.Male surfers have licence to stand at the back of the beach and ogle women for at least fifteen minutes longer than other men before being arrested, provided they at least pretend to be studying the swells in the water too. Female surfers have no additional ogling rights over other women because men only wish they all did it more often.

3.It is worth investing in a good quality wetsuit. In addition to their heating benefits, they evenly distribute excess body lard throughout the rubber skin.

4.No matter what your mates tell you, a wetsuit should be worn with the zipper at the back. I promise.

The Ping iWi Craz-E putter

The Ping iWi Craz-E putter

The Ping iWi Craz-E putter is a member of the latest generation of putters from Ping that are designed to complement the popular i-Series and Karsten Series putter lines. The iWi Craz-E putter is the result of Ping’s focus on multi-metal technology to deliver optimal weight distribution and enable the golfer increased consistency and feel on the greens. By utilising different materials in construction from the stainless steel body, a hybrid steel and elastomer insert, and a choice of steel or tungsten sole weights desingers have ensured that the Ping iWi Craz-E will deliver optimum performance. An additional weight kit, containing 4 interchangeable weights, is also available to enable the golfer to customise the set up of the iWi Craz-E based on local green conditions.

The iWi putter is Ping’s range of moeveable weight putters. Ping tell us that the ‘smash factor’ or force of impact of the iWi putter is the same as the rest of their range so it is easy to move models and this achievement is commendable. The insert gives very good feel and the sound at impact is the best of any insert putter we have tried, although not as good as a pure all metal putter. The real difference is in the sole where there are 2 steel weights of 12 grams each which can be changed. Ping have raided the tungsten larder and will be selling a separate weights kit with a wrench and a pair of 20 gram and 28 gram tungsten weights so you can adjust the weight of the putter yourself. All this flexibility is great, but we found the standard weights to be heavy enough. However with the weight set costing around a 3rd of the price of the putter itself, this is not a cheap option, but the fact such a kit is available at all is a welcome development none the less.

The new iWi Putter Series puts customization in your hands. Instead of changing putters, just change the weight to your desired feel. Want more mass towards the heel or toe to match your stroke, insert a 20- or 28-gram tungsten weight. In all, there are nine weight combinations when you choose the optional weight kit (sold separately).

Each putter in the iWi line comes standard with two 12 gram stainless steel sole weights and a two-piece 304 stainless steel/elastomer insert to give you the feel and performance found in PING putters for nearly 50 years. Available in six popular designs.

Tips Of Finding Your Best Golf Putter (Ii)

Tips Of Finding Your Best Golf Putter (Ii)

You can get a putter that is forged, cast, milled or crafted from aluminum, copper, brass, titanium, nickel, beryllium, plastics and a number of other materials. You can get those golf putters with various face materials and various inserts, again crafted from various materials to give different feels, striking surfaces and moments of inertia.

When you think of all this variety, the smartest move is to go to a online golf shop or sporting goods store and check out the various types of putters and see how they “feel” when you take a shot. That will help you determine what exactly will work for you in a putter shape and material. you’ll also note that some putters include some type of alignment lines (for example, the Odyssey White Hot XG Marxman Putter) to assist in lining up your putts. some will have lines, some have notches, some will even have a system of lines and arrows to assist you in making the shot. Will these help you with your last shot?

]]>

Also keep in mind that you don’t need to keep the grip that comes with the putter. You can always have a club fitter change it to a better grip for you if you find a putter that is perfect in every other aspect. Never settle for less than the best in your putter.

But the most important thing to remember when you’re trying different golf clubs is that one of the largest parts of a professional’s putting stroke is confidence. If you have confidence that your golf putter will strike the ball firmly without twisting, that the face is milled properly to give you a consistent striking surface then you have won half the battle. You can concentrate completely on sinking the putt.

I took all of my drivers to the pro shop and hit a few balls with on their indoor video range with each club. I could not hit a ball to save my life. The popped strait up or i topped them the hooked or sliced. they went every where but strait down the fairway. I hit about 5% strait down the fairway. I tried the TaylorMade Burner Superfast and 90-95% went strait down the fairway and gave me 20-50 yards further yardage. I had about 5% pop up duff, hook or slice. I had such a large improvement I had to buy it. I love it.

New Matrix Ozik XCON shaft

I had a Great Big Bertha before and had stopped playing golf regularly years ago. I started back to once or twice per month this past summer. I hit the GBB about 330-350 yards and now I hit the Superfast 370+. It’s a good club for me as I am tall- 6′4″- and the shaft is longer than others on the market. If I have one complaint (and it’s not a legitimate one) it is that the club is deafeningly loud when I hit the ball. It’s so loud that it literally makes your ears ring like after a gunshot. Either way I do like the club and would recommend it to any average golfer that likes to hit long off the tee.

This is the best fairway wood  I have every played. Most people exaggerate how much yardage they gain with new clubs, but I can honestly say that this club has added 20 yards to my drives. I’ve gone from a 260 yd hitter to 280! Goes straight but is easy to control as well. Great fairway wood!

Hua Hin: A fantastic beach resort town

Hua Hin: A fantastic beach resort town

No visit to Thailand is complete without a trip to the beautiful resort beaches of Hua Hin. Located 200 miles south of Bangkok, Hua Hin is one of the oldest and most popular sandy destinations in the country.

While many of the other beach resorts in Thailand – including Phuket and Samui – have been over developed and overrun with tourist hotels and restaurants, Hua Hin has retained its traditional charm as both a resort and a working fishing village.

The beach is over five miles long and surrounded by some of the best, yet least expensive, golf courses in the entire world. The city itself was discovered more than 80 years ago by King Rama VII. He chose the place as his home away from home when he wanted to escape the heat and humidity of the capital city.

Once King Rama built his palace in what had up until that point been a fishing village, other Siam nobility were soon to follow – which fueled the growth and popularity of Hua Hin.

The king’s palace – called Klai Kangwon, which means “Far From Worries” – remains an official royal residence and popular attraction to this day. Public tours are easy to arrange – even when members of the royal family are staying there!

Be careful outside the palace, however, because security is very tight and any type of public intoxication or other bad behavior near the palace is dealt with very strictly by the local police officers.

While the main tourist activity is to lie out on the sandy beach and have locals bring your drinks or provide massages, there are sites to see when you’ve decided you’ve had your fill of fun in the sun.

Most of the wealthiest families in Thailand have built their summer homes near the palace or on the beach, which means there is beautiful architecture to see as you stroll around and explore Hua Hin.

Khao Takiap is a large hill that is filled with beautiful Buddhist temples and offers the best overhead view of the city, the port and the ocean. It is a four-kilometer hike, so you may want to rent a bike or motorcycle to take you to the top.

]]>

The Hua Hin railway station is one of the oldest stations in Thailand and is so beautiful that it is considered one of the country’s landmarks.

The Spirit Houses of Brassiere Beach has a really odd history. Legend has it that the daughter of a local fisherman was eaten by fish because she was too beautiful to live in the world. Today, men and women leave brasseries on the beach in order to ask the gods for good luck.

Namtok Pa Lau is an 11-tier waterfall located about 30 miles outside of town. It is easy to get to by bus, and is particularly popular on hot and humid days.

Wat Huay Mongkol was where famed monk Luang Phor Thuat lived his life. He was known for performing miracles and his former residence is now a large public park featuring a giant statue of him as its centerpiece.

At night Hua Hin comes alive with a large open-air market where you can buy nearly anything under the moon, and see what types of interesting fish and fruits the locals like to eat. You can also sample any of the many excellent seafood restaurants that surround the market.

If you want to sample local products, look for things made from Khommaphat, which is a type of cotton unique to the Hua Hin region. They use it to make everything from shirts to large decorative pieces of art.

The one downside of Hua Hin is that it does not have as active a nightlife culture as the other beach resort towns in Thailand. Your best bet is to hit the Soi Bintabaht and Soi Selakam  areas where you can find local beer bars. By royal decree, there are no go-go bars in town.

Hua Hin has three important regional festivals, including:

The Thailand’s International Kite Festival is held from March through May in Hua Hin during even numbered years. It features stunt kites, big kites, little kites, high tech kites, traditional Thai kites, and displays of international kites. Hua Hin Jazz Festival is held through the month of June on the beach. It attracts world-class Jazz musicians and is considered one of the most popular events in Hua Hin. Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally. Sponsored by Vintage Car Club of Thailand and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the car rally is held every December. All of the cars in the rally are vintage from the 1920s, in celebration of when the King discovered the city.

Getting to Hua Hin is easy from nearly any part of Thailand. It is hooked up to most of the major rail lines and you can get a direct train from Bangkok. There are also several bus routes from both Bangkok and Malaysia.

Overall, the weather is temperate. There is a brief rainy season in the spring, but the showers tend to be very short and are often over in five minutes or less – so you can get right back to the sun and fun!

You will notice that there are many, many more Thai tourists in Hua Hin than in the other national beach resorts. While westerners do come to Hua Hin, there are far fewer of them here than in Phuket or any of the other beach towns.

This leads to a certain charm, because Hua Hin has yet to be completely corrupted by tourists – and you can feel like you are having a very authentic Thailand vacation experience!

So, next time you are in Thailand, hop on the train and check out the beautiful beaches, waterfalls and temples of Hua Hin. Consider it a royal experience!

You’ll be glad you did!

The tee shot is the ego shot in golf. Learning how to drive a golf ball far is way up on the list for most beginning golfers. The only problem is most amateur and beginner golfers drive it way shorter than they want to, because their golf swing technique is not proper to encourage longer golf drives.

Have proper equipment. Today’s equipment and balls are not necessarily tailored for 7 – 8 degree drivers. That is a thing of the past. Getting the ball up in the air on a good trajectory is the first step to driving the ball longer. Many touring pros regularly use 9 and 10 degree drivers and drive the ball 300 plus yards. Plus, you will get much more consistency with a more lofted driver.

Golf Ball Position Forward

To promote maximum launch angle you need an ascending blow on the golf ball. Positioning it up in your stance, just inside your left heel will make it much easier to hit “up on the ball”. Choosing the right golf clubs is important to driver golf ball, I just buy golf clubs online, such as the onlinegolf118. Com. Maintaining interesting conversation

Maintaining interesting conversation

One of the greatest advantages of dating online is that we’ve already had the chance to chat before we’ve met face-to-face. We already have an idea what interests this person and maybe what they’ve done with their lives.

Online dating sites can make us think we’re safe in assuming that once we go on the first ‘real’ date, conversation will flow – but not always.

It’s natural to be nervous on a first date – and nerves are the great enemy of easy, natural conversation. So if you already have been chatting to your potential new love online in a singles chat room, then before you head out on that all-important first date, make a mental note of what he or she has told you about themselves.

Conventionally, many first dates take place at a coffee shop, but next time you arrange a date, think outside the square a little. Try a more casual and engaging environment like ten pin bowling or putt putt golf. Go for a bush walk perhaps and stop for lunch in the National Park, try something more interesting than the standard first date coffee shop.

]]>

So picking the venue for your first date is important, especially if you feel you won’t win any awards for conversation starters.

The art of conversing is a two-way street. If you see your date has stalled in the chatting game, then it’s time to take over the driving. Ask them questions about themselves and be interested in the answers. Use what you already know about them from when you first met in the singles chat room.

Be forthcoming with who you are as a person, we all love when someone opens up to us, especially on a date when we are trying our best to assess the other persons characteristics – make it easy for your date, show them who you really are.

It’s always wise to restrain yourself from being too opinionated about touchy subjects such as religion or race issues. Show your date your easy going and open minded self before you blast them with your pent up views about what’s wrong with the world.

When you’re talking, end your comments by asking what you’re date thinks on the matter – in other words, draw them in. Avoid monopolizing the talk and ask open ended questions.

Bonny Albo, a writer who has focused on online dating matters, sums up the art of conversation with these words: “Concentrate on adopting your own experiences and interweaving them in with the other individuals answers. By doing so you will be formulating a connection with the individual, producing hooks of information with which to initiate a conversation at a future moment.”
