Why An Early Break Is So Important In Golf

Why An Early Break Is So Important In Golf

Article by Gerald Mason

Whenever we go to a golf tournament and see a really good player hit the ball, we receive two vivid impressions. The first is how far the ball goes with seemingly so little effort. The second is of a certain measured cadence in the upward and downward movement of the club. Both are accurate impressions.

Now if we happen to be on the practice tee, where we can watch this player hit shot after shot, we will notice two other things. One is that he swings all his clubs at about the same speed; he doesn’t seem to hit the 3 wood any harder than he hits the 7 iron. The second thing we notice, when we let our gaze wander to other players practicing, is that while most of them are deliberate, there are differences in their swinging speeds.

Timing is the answer to the first accomplishment–the long hit with little effort. Rhythm produces the measured cadence in the upward and downward movement of the club. And the differences we notice in swinging speed among other players are differences in tempo.

The hands will take over soon enough, as an automatic, reflex action. The problem is to keep them out while still keeping them moving. If we keep them out while our body moves the club from the top, our timing will be far better

Yet the ball still flies out much farther than it should, for the effort the player seems to be putting into it. This is very marked in the graceful players of smaller stature, such as Gene Littler, 1961 National Open champion, and Dow Finsterwald, former National PGA champion.

Timing

The answer to the effort-distance puzzle being timing, just what is timing? For one thing, it is a word that has been used more loosely, perhaps, than any other in golf literature. We have been blandly told that we should work to improve our timing, that our timing is off, that without good timing we cannot hope to play well. But there, having given the word the once-over-lightly treatment, the oracles have left us. They have never adequately explained timing or told us what we should do to improve ours. Our private guess is that they don’t know themselves what it is.

A dictionary will tell you that timing is: “The regulating of the speed of a motion, stroke, or blow, so that it reaches its maximum at the correct moment.” In golf, obviously, this would mean regulating the speed of the club head so as to cause it to reach its maximum as it hits the ball.

The key phrase is “regulating of the speed.” The better the speed is regulated, the better the timing; the poorer the regulation, the poorer the timing. It is here that at least 95 per cent of all golfers have their worst trouble.

They have it because the regulation of the speed depends not on how the club head is manipulated by the hands but on how and when other parts of the swinging system operate: the hips, the shoulders, the arms, the hands. If these move in the right way and in the right order, they will automatically regulate the speed of the club head so that it reaches its maximum as it hits the ball. It is, in effect, a chain reaction of movement, with the club head getting the final effect.

The reason the vast majority of golfers have such trouble timing a shot satisfactorily is that, subconsciously or consciously, they try to regulate the speed of the club head directly with their hands, without using the intermediary links of the hips, shoulders, and arms. When they do this they get an early but never very great reaction, in terms of speed, from the club head. This is the old familiar “hitting too soon” or “hitting from the top.” When the intermediary links are used and the chain reaction is allowed to take its course, there is a late reaction by the club head, which then accelerates to great speed at impact. There is a common expression to describe the player who uses the chain reaction: “He waits on the club.” It may not be grammatical but it is descriptive.

What this all comes down to is, the expression of good timing is the late hit. The expression of poor timing is the early hit. We have already, in previous chapters, explained the moves that produce the late hit and the early hit. Here, as we discuss timing, we isolate one key move that leads to good or improved timing. It is this: Let the body not the hands start moving the club on the downswing.

Once you can do this you are on the road to vastly better golf. You will have the feeling that you are starting down with arms and club close to the body close to the axis where they should be at this time.

So much has been written over the years about the importance of the hands in swinging the club, that many of us are entirely too hand conscious. A standing vote of thanks is due Bill Casper for stating, in a description of his swing as it reached the hitting position: “At this point my body is still swinging the club.” Many of us have been sure of that for years, but Casper, to our knowledge, was the first of the top tournament pros with the courage to say it.

Nearly all good players will give us impressions of timing and rhythm. The more graceful the player, the more vivid the impression will be. Sam Snead, among the moderns, is the perfect example. Among the giants of the past, Bob Jones’s swing was once called the “poetry of motion,” and the late Macdonald Smith was probably the most effortless swinger who ever played the game. The players of today swing harder at the ball than did their predecessors, with the result that theirs is more of a hitting than a swinging action.

Wanna Get Better At Your Golf Swing? Then Read This!

Your swing should be one smooth, flowing motion. Swinging violently at the ball is the usual approach of beginners. They don’t realize the different parts of the swing are meant to be one motion. Think of the entire swing as a single musical motion to help improve it. The back swing would be the opening notes, the fore swing would be the next part, and the last part is the follow through. If you approach your swing with violence and only put raw strength behind it, you’re more likely to just slice or to send your ball flying with no hope of accuracy. Use the approach of smooth and lazy.

The inside of your right foot is where you need to place your body weight. The distribution of weight and body mechanics is important to learn as early as possible in your game. Of course you need power in your swings, and you’ll be able to have that much more when you’re resting on that leg/knee. Your ball will not be consistent as it travels if you do not have your weight properly displaced on your right knee. You must maintain that steadiness factor in your game. Your right leg needs to be strong and like some kind of Greek pillar, but relaxed.

Be sure you swing at it easier than normal when it’s windy. You can produce negative effects on your ball trajectory by hitting too hard when it’s windy. Remember what Greg Norman said, “swing easy into the breezy.” It’s easy to think that you need more force when the wind is working against you. Remember: not everything can be solved with force. Swinging easy helps you to maintain control over the ball. Wind can feel good, sure, but don’t let it take you down the wrong path. You can improve your golf swing in a number of different ways. Beginners are willing to pay good money to learn how they can improve their golf swing. There are many classes available, all with this primary goal. You can also improve your golf swing on your own by implementing these tips. If you want to improve your game even further, invest in high quality golf swing analysis software.

New Tiger, Old Tiger, What’s the difference?

New Tiger, Old Tiger, What’s the difference?

He still curses. He still tosses clubs. His interviews, still, are clipped and smug — the few he gives, that is. This new version of Tiger Woods was supposed to be warmer, fuzzier, someone who showed more respect for the game and all those fans who’ve made him a very rich man. A year later, it appears as if the only thing about Woods that’s really changed is his ability to win ping anser. No one expected Woods to become Phil Mickelson when he returned to the game following the swiftest, sharpest downfall of a star athlete in recent memory. Taming his temper and ego was going to be as big a project as his swing change, and he’s having about as much luck. Sure, he’ll occasionally wave as he walks off the tee, make eye contact with fans here and there. He has stopped during pro-am rounds to pose for pictures. He’s even embraced Twitter, showing a charming personality in 140 characters or less. Those things are relatively easy to do, however. When it comes to basic course etiquette and being more accessible, he can’t seem to be bothered. He was fined for spitting on the green during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year. He cursed enough during the Masters that CBS’ coverage probably should have come with a “parental discretion is advised” disclaimer. His interview with Bill Macatee after shooting a 67 on Sunday was needlessly testy, making his uncomfortable chat with Peter Kostis a year earlier look like a fireside chat. Even when he does talk, he sidesteps the most mundane questions about how his life has changed, and treats reasonable inquiries about the state of his game with disdain ping anser forged irons. “When he was at his height, he was great golfer and had a very likable persona,” said Michael Gordon, a principal at Group Gordon Strategic Communications, a corporate and crisis firm in New York. “Both are missing right now.” Woods is hardly the first flawed golfing hero. Arnold Palmer was criticized for smoking. Ben Hogan was considered aloof. John Daly makes soap operas seem dull. And even Woods’ boorish antics were overlooked while he piled up wins in record numbers and closed in on Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors. If his Sunday run at the Masters was any indication, all will be forgiven if he starts winning again. But with nary a title in almost 17 months, patience with his tantrums and pouting is wearing thin. Before the sex scandal, Woods had a Q Score — the measure of likeability among consumers — of 28, second only to Michael Jordan among athletes. Now his Q Score is 14, putting him in the same company as serial problem children Terrell Owens and Randy Moss. “He was never the most personable athlete out there by any means. He always had that attitude, but it fell by the wayside because he was a champion. That’s not the case now,” said Henry Schafer, executive vice president of The Q Scores Company. “This is where he’s at, and that’s what people are going to focus on until he starts winning.” His spitting incident in Dubai caused so much outrage that Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson suggested this week that the PGA and European tours make their disciplinary actions public. “I would not want to give the impression in any way that the standards of behavior in golf are poor,” Dawson told the Press Association on Tuesday at Royal St. George’s. “I think they are very high, and golf is still held up as a model for many other sports. These particular incidents that we see do get a great deal of publicity and rightly so.” Woods has carefully crafted his image, and he’s not about to give up that control now. But big-time sports are equal parts entertainment and athletics, and there’s a price to pay for being the first billion athlete. If Woods wants folks to shell out .99 for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 video game or pay 0 for the privilege of wearing his TW Air Zoom golf shoes, he’s got to give something back. Otherwise, don’t be surprised if fans start drifting to some of the game’s other personalities — like the little girl standing behind the 18th green at Augusta National wearing a Rickie Fowler hat and Puma shoes ping anser ironsMore details at http://www.ourdiscountgolf.com.

Widely praised Yes Marilyn Putter

Widely praised Yes Marilyn Putter

When a regular putter face impacts a golf ball it results in loft causing skidding, side- and even back-spinning before the ball can begin rolling forward on the green, this can’t be seen by the naked eye, but C-Grooves ‘lift’ the back of the ball to start it rolling forward. By gripping the back of the ball and lifting it forward on impact, the C-Grooves of a Yes putter create almost instant stabilization, causing the ball to roll forward much sooner than any other putter. The Yes Marilyn Putter is one of the C-Grooves technology putters

The C-Groove Marilyn model is a mallet-style putter made of 304 stainless steel. It features a compact mallet head that is face-balanced and perimeter weighted. Whether struck dead, a millimeter or even a quarter inch off center, the patented concentric edges on the C-Grove putter roll the ball sooner, for more consistent length and more consistent direction. That translates to more putts made, no matter the circumstances, no matter the pressure. This technology has been proven in thousands of comparison tests performed by professional and amateur golfers at over 100 PGA Tour Events worldwide and at major trade shows in the U.S. and Europe.

Features:  1. Used by YES! Staff player Laura Davies. 2. Three Sight lines for easy alignment. 3. 340 gram head weight; Loft: 2.5 degrees; Lie: 72 degrees std. (2 degrees flat or 2 degrees upright also available) 4. Double bend steel shaft. 5. Titanium carbon finish. 6. Available in RH or LH models, shaft lengths 32″ to 37″. 7. Custom fitted head cover. 8. Available in Pink.

This result has been proven using a computer controlled putting robot and high-speed cameras. Over a 20 foot putt, the C-Groove putter was tested by an independent testing company against several putter models of the major golf companies. In all cases, the C-Groove putter dramatically outperformed the competition.

Using the Yes C-Groove putter creates stabilization in the rolling motion dramatically sooner than any other putter. Forward rolling motion is as much as 6 times greater with the use of the Yes! C-Groove putter versus other putters. This result has been proven using a computer controlled putting robot and high-speed cameras. Over a 20 foot putt, the C-Groove putter was tested by an independent testing company against several putter models of the major golf companies. In all cases, the C-Groove putter dramatically outperformed the competition.

Golfers’ review:

I love my new “Marilyn” Yes putter. I ordered it for my golf bag in Florida and find I can not readjust to putting without it here in Chicago! I was out in CA and found it is very popular there also. We were all singing its praises.

Superb putter, nice weight, easy alignment and good grip, has given me a lot more confidence on the greens. Excellent feel and distance judgment. I would recommend it to anyone looks for putters which feel great and give you so much confidence on the greens.

I’ve used the Marilyn for over a year now and find it first rate. I own an original Ping Anser, Scottie Cameron and Odyssey 2-ball. All excellent putters but I prefer the Yes to all of them. I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who has a problem with putting.

Quite simply it is the best putter I have every used. The ball rolls true and this year I have made more long putts and been a more consistent putter than ever before. If Yes! is ever looking for another salesperson – just give me a call.

This is truly the best putter I have ever used. The most immediate and noticeable aspect of this putter is how quickly it gets the ball rolling. There is virtually no skipping when the ball is struck, it simply goes into an immediate roll. It is so much fun to have this much confidence in my putting. I highly recommend (for any handicap) at least trying this brand of putter at your local pro shop or golf store (Golf Galaxy carries the Yes! brand) and see how the c-grooves roll the ball so quickly compared to any other brand! Be careful though because you will probably leave with a Yes putter! The Marilyn design is my favorite, easy to aim, looks great, instills confidence and feels great in my hands.

This is one of the nicest Mallet putters that I have had a chance to play. The lines help with alignment. The feel is muted when compared to a blade. In my opinion, it is the low loft and not the grooves that dictate the performance of this club. I get a truer roll and a better feel with this mallet. The matte finish really works out well – especially with the sun. I especially like the magnetic putter cover which does not come off like other covers (on their respective putter).

Putter Will Be The Key Factor If Woods Wins Again

Putter Will Be The Key Factor If Woods Wins Again

Article by Aaliyah Green

It was glad to see a Woods holding the trophy again Sunday. Cheyenne Woods, a junior at Wake Forest, won the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s golf championship by seven shots, firing a bogey-free 68 in the final round.

Just like Uncle Tiger used to do it. “My niece, Cheyenne, just won the ACC golf title by 7 shots with TaylorMade R9! That’s awesome, I’m so proud of her,” Tiger said.

Meanwhile, it has been 586 days since Cheyenne’s famous uncle held a trophy. Woods is going to win again, of that much we’re certain. He showed flashes of Tiger 1.0 at the Masters, particularly the hooking 3-wood that chased up onto the eighth green in the final round, setting up an eagle putt that shook the pines, led to a front-nine 31 and put him in the mix.

Now, his decline is going to be different than, say, Billy Mayfair’s. It’s just that what once seemed a given. Woods surpassing Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships is looking less and less like a sure thing.

The competition is better than it was 10 years ago, when Woods basically had to beat Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh. Now, there are Rory McIlroys, Charl Schwartzels and Matteo Manasseros coming out of the woodwork, and none of them are intimidated by Woods.

Woods’ thrice-overhauled swing is a favourite topic of the television analysts, but it’s obvious he’s making progress under Sean Foley and he struck the ball well enough to win the Masters. It’s the putter that is holding him back. For a dozen years, Woods was maybe the best clutch putter the game had ever seen. At times, such as on the 72nd hole of the 2008 U.S. Open by Ping G15, he seemingly willed the ball into the cup. No one can putt like that forever. Of the game’s best players, only Nicklaus remained a great putter past his physical prime. Is Tiger’s time up? He has switched from the Scotty Cameron with which he won 71 tournaments to a Nike Method. That bespeaks a lack of confidence.

What happened at Augusta National 10 days ago, even given Woods’ long winless drought, was eye-opening if not shocking. In the old days, if he’d shot 31 on the front nine Sunday and was tied for the lead with the back nine to play, it was over.

But Woods managed only a pedestrian 36 coming in. He is three-putted on No. 12, inexplicably missing a two-footer for par. The CBS announcers tried to make excuses for him, pointing out that he had to wait a long time while playing partner Martin Laird three-putted. Woods hit a great shot on the par-5 15th to set up a six-footer for eagle and Woods Wins But Not Tiger, the kind of pressure putt he once rammed into the back of the cup. This time, he tried to coax it in with a tentative stroke and missed. On the par-3 16th he played too much break on a 10-foot birdie putt and missed again.

Of all the obstacles he will have to overcome to catch Nicklaus – an aging body, a crop of talented young kids, a closing window of opportunity – it is the putter that ultimately will determine whether he is successful.

Tiger Woods News and the Media World

Tiger Woods News and the Media World

Sometimes I wonder, is this just Tiger Woods’ World and we just so happen to live in it too?  I am sure any citizen living in the United States that has watched at least 3 minutes of news on any major media outlet over the past several months can recall that Tiger Woods cheated on his now estranged wife Elin Nordegren, right?

Well, if not, here it is. Back in late November of 2009, Tiger Woods was injured in a one-car accident outside of his home, near the Orlando, Florida area during the very early hours of the morning.  Early reports suggested that Woods crashed into a tree, just yards from his driveway and that wife Elin had smashed a window open with a golf club to get to him.

The mainstream and regional media outlets went crazy with running this story all day long, as it soon became worldwide news that the greatest golfer in the world, Tiger Woods, had been in a car accident.  My initial thoughts were, “Oh, my God! I hope Tiger is okay,” but then as the story unfolded, it seemed odd that Elin would smash his window open with a golf club to get to him. I then began to think, there is more to this story, they probably got into a very serious argument and she just lost it, chased him out of the house with a golf club, and then as Woods began to drive away, Elin smashed in his car window with the golf club, most likely assisting in causing the accident involving Tiger.

Then over the next few days, more news broke out as he had been cheating on his wife Elin with multiple mistresses over the years, as one-by-one began to come forward.  Shortly after everything came out into the public, Tiger gave a public apology to his wife, family, fellow golfers, and fans, as he withdrew himself from the PGA Tour and competitive golf in order to concentrate on his family and seek therapy for his “sex addiction.”

So, now that Tiger Woods was out of the professional golf scene, self-admitted into a sex therapy center, and was seemingly on track to rekindle all with wife Elin, his family, fellow golfers, and fans, the media was relentless in covering everything about Tiger Woods and literally ripping his life apart.  More porn stars, party girls, cocktail waitresses were coming out very vocally in the media and demanding all sorts of things from Tiger Woods, and as ridiculous as they were, the media continued to allocate hours and hours to these “opportunist” women.

I believe that society does look up to sports icons like Tiger Woods, who has inspired millions with his athleticism, charitable giving, and more. Yet, he made a mistake, actually several of them over the course of a few years. Tiger let fame, wealth, and opportunity corrupt him, as he fell prey to the many vices that surround him daily.  However terrible it all was, there as been much worse acts committed by multiple celebrities, politicians, and athletes over the years, yet none of them have received anything close to the amount of attention played against Tiger Woods.

I am not suggesting that Tiger Woods should get a free pass on his wrong-doings, yet what he did is over now, and it’s been nearly eight months since the story broke out, yet Tiger Woods cheating on his wife is still a main subject in the popular media today. Really guys? For instance, when Tiger Woods was recently in Ireland for a pro-am golf outing, he was hounded by the press about his “cheating” and “mistakes” he made.  Tiger is there to play “golf,” not answer to personal life matters with someone like, Dr. Phil.  Obviously he is going to be paying for his “mistakes” financially and emotionally for the rest of his life, i.e. 0 million in a divorce settlement with Elin about to be finalized.

Maybe one of Tiger’s bigger mistakes was getting married so young? It happens to millions of people worldwide, they marry early on, realize they maybe should of waited longer, and/or do stupid things like cheat on the one you supposedly love and wish to be with the rest of your life.  But to be dragged through the mud for months is just getting very old to have to see and hear daily!

Not many people do take into account the many millions Tiger Woods’ charity has given out over the years and all the good he does for society and children worldwide.  Most people believe in second chances.  I think it is worth at least sitting on the sidelines and seeing how Tiger Woods will bounce back… if at all. But, he should be given a fair shot to do so in the mean time by the media, fellow golfers, fans, and even family.

So, when Tiger is at a golf tournament, questions should be about his “golf game,” and NOT about cheating on his wife, etc.  When in public and away from a golf course, Tiger Woods is fair game for scrutiny and questions about his personal life, even though it’s none of our business.

All I am saying is that the media should be covering Tiger Woods golf news, since that is all he is doing now. His personal life, we pretty much know all there is to know already, so, thank you mainstream media for the 24/7 coverage to date that Tiger cheated on his wife, he may have a love child with porn star, or another alleged mistress (opportunist) claims relationship with him, and so much more.

There should be some balance in reporting on Tiger Woods golf, charitable, and personal life news… I am saying is that people at large are getting very sick of hearing the same old news everyday. Hopefully, the media will catch a clue and move on like the rest of us…

Steps To A Perfect Putter

Steps To A Perfect Putter

There are five steps to make a pertect putter.

The first step is that make sure you get the right and quality golf equipment, if you are a beginner, the suggestion for you is to get a good set of cheap golf clubs, which including drivers, irons, woods, putters, and so on. In this article we talk about putters.

You should calculate your best putter length you must base it on your height or your body shape. You do a wrist-to-floor measurement. Measure form the inside of your wrist at the top of your hand all the way down to the floor. Then you can select the putters that fit you best.

The second step is your hand position. When you hit the ball, you should know the best position for your hand. There are a lot of factors that will affect the proper loft, which include offset putters, ball position, and hand position. This will create negative loft at the point of impact; therefore you will need additional loft to counteract this preference. If you have a conventional hand position then you will benefit from a standard lofted putter.

The third is your posture, when you’re putting, you should notice what is your most posture. You should choose the putter according to your posture and your golf level or your habit. If stand more upright, you will be better suited to longer putters( TaylorMade Rossa Itsy Bitsy Monza Spider Putter) that have more upright angles. If you fall into this category you will need a shorter putter that has flatter angles with it.

The fourth step is your putting stroke. You must consider this because depending on your wrist action, it will dictate what type of grips you need. Players with more of a pendulum action will choose wider or fatter grips to inhibit any unwanted wrist action. A golfer who has more wrist action in their stroke will prefer the smaller, thinner, more traditional sized grips.
The last one I want to share is that your stroke path. If you have an inside square inside path, then you have a tendency to pull your putts and will benefit from it. If you are more of that, you will have more of a tendency to push. You would then benefit more from a face balanced putter with the weight dispersed evenly in the putter head.

So you should go to get yourself a right fitted putter. Some putters are fits all golfers, such as the Ping iWi Series CRAZ-E putter. You know that good putting is essential to your game. If you get the proper putters for you, you will have more advantage in your game, and then you may get more scores in the game!

Learn to Hit a Low, Penetrating Stinger Shot Like Tiger Does

Learn to Hit a Low, Penetrating Stinger Shot Like Tiger Does

The best time to play the Stinger shot is when you are faced with a very narrow tee shot and there is a lot of trouble bordering the fairway. The last thing you want is for your ball to miss the fairway and land up in one of the multiple hazards.

So what should you do? The first thing is too not hit your driver as it is definitely not worth the risk. This type of shot requires a three wood or even a two iron for you to execute it successfully. Once you have selected the appropriate club follow these steps.

Step 1: Tee the ball very low to the ground.

Step 2: Ensure that you grip the club firmly with your left hand. This is extremely important as your left hand is the most responsible for controlling the movement of the clubhead.

Step 3: Bring your right hand on to the grip, but make sure you grip the club lightly with this hand as it will allow you to increase your hand-arm speed and will also add significant power to your shot. Which you will definitely need to compensate for the distance you will be losing for not using the driver.

Step 4: Position your hands ahead of the ball so that the clubface is still pointing at the target, but is slightly closed.

Step 5: Start your backswing, keeping it as flat as possible until you get to the parallel position. At this point your right hand should be hinged slightly.

Step 6: Start your downswing, but keep your right hand hinged and then unhinge your wrist at impact. You should also ensure that the back of your left hand is turned downward to keep the clubface closed at impact.

This should help you to significantly reduce the loft of the club and will help you hit a long, low flying shot that will split the fairway and consequently have a lot of roll. Make sure you practice this shot on the driving range first as it is a bit unorthodox and will take some getting used to. I hope this helps.
