Back pain ranks number one in health complaints for which men and women seek some form of medical treatment. Among the most common causes of back pain is simple over exertion by an individual which strains the back muscles.
Lifting heavy items incorrectly without properly using the leg muscles, poor posture and sitting for long periods of time in chairs that offer poor back support can all cause strained back muscles. Back pain treatment for muscle strain and spasm include rest, application of hot towels to reduce inflammation and over the counter medication for fast pain relief.
Sciatica is a type of back disorder that usually requires back pain treatment from a medical professional because it is usually intense pain that disrupts an individual’s daily routine. Sciatica is the term given to several symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve, which travels all the way from the lower back down the leg and into the foot, becomes compressed or inflamed, causing severe and pinching pain that can be felt all the way from the lower back down through the leg and into the foot. The symptoms of sciatica, which include pain, numbness, tingling or weakness, are usually felt on only one side of the body. Sitting or standing for long periods of time can aggravate these symptoms, while laying flat, walking or performing gentle exercises to extend the spine can alleviate the symptoms.
Initial back pain treatment to relieve discomfort along the sciatic nerve includes modifying the daily routine to avoid sitting and instead alternating periods of walking with laying down on a firm surface such as a couch or bed. Drugs containing acetaminophen and purchased over the counter at the local pharmacy can go a long way in decreasing the inflammation and pain felt during this condition. Some individuals respond to applying a heating pad for at least 10 minutes every few hours, while others feel that the pain is helped by applying an ice pack.
More serious treatment may be advised by a doctor to get to the root of what is causing the sciatic nerve to be inflamed or compressed so the condition doesn’t become chronic. These treatments may include a period of physical therapy, steroid injections and even surgery if the cause is discovered to be a herniated spinal disc that is pressing on the nerve.
Back pain can be either inconvenient or incapacitating or both. A diagnosis to determine its cause is a valuable use of time in order to select the most effective treatment method.
