And by the way, if, by chance, my natural ballflight was a fade, instead of hitting a draw, I’d play for a straight shot and aim a little less right of the target. Either way, I’m letting the wind move the ball back into the fairway. Lastly, when playing in the wind, no matter which way it’s blowing, don’t think you need to swing any harder than normal. Just accept the fact that wind is blowing, and although it may be in an undesirable direction, the key is to avoid going to war with it just play the PING G20 Irons. This will foul up your rhythm and tempo, not to mention your scorecard.

I really had no idea how hard it would be to get ahold of more than just a demo 6 iron. They have a small ball in the center that is made from a variety of materials, but the one common thing about them is that they are very tight. The harder the inner ball is, the farther a ball will travel. These hard surfaced balls are also known for their lack of spinning ability, which makes them much harder to control.Balls that are better for control and spinning ability are made up of three pieces. The inside is still tight like in the long distance balls, but the outer layer is much softer, and the third piece that the distance balls are missing is a layer of fabric between the soft shell and the tight ball. This layer helps soften the hit of the club, which makes the ball travel less distance.There are middle of the road balls as well, that are good for distance and control. These balls have multiple layers. They have the tight inside, and a somewhat soft outside. Then there are layers in between that are not as soft as the control balls’ middle layer.So what kind of ball should you choose for your game? That depends on what type of player you are. If you are beginner or have a high handicap then you probably will not hit the ball perfectly every time. This means you need to worry less about distance and focus on controlling your shots. If you an experienced golfer you will likely want to choose the multiple layered ball. Because you probably have great swing speed, you will not lose out on much distance, and you will be able to use your skills to control the ball and make it do whatever you want. You should try out different ball types to see what best fits your game, but use my guidelines to help you decide what type of ball you think might work out best.

If you play any amount of golf you have noticed that some golf courses have driving ranges and others do not. From my experience a golf course would not have a driving range because of the area. By that I mean the course is located in a city that doesn’t have enough real estate to be able to provide to its players. While other golf courses never had it included in their plans when designing it.So what is the driving range most useful for? Some would say it’s place to get yourself loose before you head out to the first tee. Others will say its a place to hone in your skills that you can take from the driving range to the golf course. However, most of us who are avid golfers know this is easier said than done. I have experienced a really bad warm up session on the driving range where I couldn’t hit anything where I was looking, and then had a great ball striking round. While other warm up sessions I struck the ball wonderfully but failed to carry that over to my round.Such is the normal ups and downs golfers of all levels will experience. If you watch golf you may have noticed the announcers will watch some of the players warm up before they begin their round. They often make comments on how they looked warming up on the range and how well they were able to hit control shots of all types. This rule pertains to the best players in the world as well. Tiger Woods for example, has been known to have an awful warm up, and then went to the golf course and played “beautifully”, as he likes to put it.So if you are confused on why you may hit the ball great during your warm up before you play, and then fail to be able to carry that over to the golf course – know that you are in company of not only most golfers but some of the best players in the world as well.So what can we do about it? Well golf is like a lot of others sports in that we need to actually practice like we play. Take Basketball for an example. Coaches will simulate “real game” situations everyday during practice to make it seem as much like the real thing as possible. I can answer that for you and say with an affirmative NO. If you could spend 10 minutes or so and picture the first few holes in your mind, and actually hit some of the shots you might experience on those holes, it could help your performance on the golf course.We all know how important it is to get off to a good start and for those who are not as experienced as professionals probably aren’t mentally tough enough to handle a shaky start. It’s a fault I’ve pointed out in my golf tips newsletter. I even do it myself sometimes. But reaching out is the result of standing too far away from the ball, which shifts your weight onto your toes. When you swing, gravity pulls you toward the ground, causing you to lose your balance. If you don’t play often, pay close attention to your set up. It’s the foundation of your swing, so make sure you’re in a balanced and athletic position before swing the club.

Not Releasing Tension

Most swing errors occur at set-up and one of the biggest causes of error is tension. Too much tension in your hands causes the rest of your body to tense up, impeding the flow of your swing. Beginning with a good start where you synchronize the swinging of the club with the turning motion of your body gets you into the flow, and it helps you put the club in good position without having to think too much about it. And we all know what happens when we think too much. To get loose, start your swing by holding the club a couple of feet in front of and above the ball. Grip the club loosely and waggle it a few times. It will loosen your hands up and your body as well.

Slicing

Eighty-five percent of all golfers slice. It’s especially prevalent with weekend golfers who don’t get a chance to correct the fault in practice or through a lot of play. The split-hand drill reinforces a free release, allowing you to rotate your forearms through impact and turns your slice into a draw. It’s a drill I often use with players taking my golf lessons. Here’s what you do:

Grab your driver and address a ball on the tee. When you grip the club, do so by taking hold of the shaft with your hands a few inches apart. Instead of your normal set up position, rest the driver on the ground inside the target line and behind your rear foot. From this position, try to hit the ball by sweeping up and rotate your forearms thorough impact. You should finish with your right hand above your left. Try this drill on the practice range just before teeing off. It will give you the feeling of a draw as opposed to a slice.

Poor Left Hand At Impact

No matter what you do with the rest of your swing, the critical moment is at impact. If you can get the back of the left-hand square to the target (for right-handed players) and you have a neutral grip, the ball has to go straight. If you haven’t played for awhile, your goal should be to reinforce the feeling of getting your left hand leading the club face and the back of your hand facing the target. Take a club and try hitting a chip shot with just your left hand to remind you of the feeling of hitting the ball with your left-hand leading. Remember if you slice, you’re hitting the ball with the side of your left hand. If you hook, your hand has turned over too much.

Coming Over The Top

Coming over the top affects not only weekend golfers but also PGA pros after a long lay off. This fault is strictly a path issue. Here’s a drill that will help you correct it. First, lay a club down on the ground behind the ball and parallel to the target line. Take your normal address position, then pull the right foot back, until the right toes are even with your left heel (for right-handers). Then swing along your foot line. This drill forces you to swing from the inside, creating a straighter shaped shot. Try hitting a few shots like this before starting a round. It will help eliminate the over-the-top swing.

If you keep these five faults–and their drills–in mind the next time you play, you will have a fighting chance of having a good round, even after a long lay off. Of course, correcting these faults won’t guarantee that you’ll break 100, but they may help you cut a few strokes off your score and make playing on the weekend more fun.
