How you finish often reveals what’s happening during your swing In fact, I often key on a player’s finish in my golf lessons to determine exactly how to help he or she can improve their game. You can do the same for yourself–if you know what to look for.

Below I describe four of the more common finishes I see when giving golf lessons, possible causes of the finish, and ideas on how to eliminate, the swing faults that cause them.

High FinishThe high finish position is among the most common. Hands held high and a flying left elbow (for right handers) characterize the position, associated with pushes, thins shots, and shots struck toward the clubface’s heel. High finishers tend to swing on an in to out path that’s extreme, with the club traveling to the right of the target, minimizing control.

If you read my golf tips, you’ll find that the in-to-out swing is my preferred approach; however, in this case, it’s extreme. When the inside-out move becomes severe, you push the shot. When club comes too far inside with a closed clubface, you pull the shot. Also, swinging too far inside delivers the club below the swing plane, preventing the club from striking the ball on a descending path. The key is not to exaggerate the move too much.

Low FinishThe low finish stems from an overly out-to-in swing path, caused by a downswing motion initiated by the arms instead of the body. Players developing this finish come over the top of the plane, as I’ve explained in my golf tips, causing the clubhead to cut across the ball through the impact zone. The position is associated with pull slices, pull hooks, and shots off the toe. Since the club is moving steeply and across the ball, none of the shots are well struck. Nor do they fly toward the intended target.

If you freeze this finish, you’ll notice that the player’s hands and arms seemed to be all jammed up. That’s because the arms have moved earlier than the body, impeding the arm’s movement and limiting their extension. To fix this problem, you obviously need to work on the body/arm synchronization, so your arms don’t out race your body on the downswing.

Lunge FinishI don’t know how popular this finish is statistically, but I often see it in my golf lessons. With this type of finish, the player’s head is in front of his or her left leg, or the golfer feels himself or herself falling forward. It stems from a poor rotation of the lower body through the hitting zone, causing the upper body to get ahead of the ball. The end result: the player fails to stay behind the ball during the swing.

To correct this fault, you need to work on your hip rotation. Try leading the down swing with your hips instead of your body. Try placing a chair to your front side, with the back of the chair just touching your hips. Take a few practice swings being careful to stay in contact with the chair’s back as you turn through impact. Also, try finishing with your head over your left leg.

Reverse C FinishThe Reverse C Finish, in many golf instruction courses, was thought of as the perfect finish– that is, up until a few years ago. Now, it’s not as highly regarded. With the reverse C, the golfer slides his legs and body laterally to the left (for right-handers) and too fast through impact. The weight, however, remains on the back foot. A reverse pivot–which occurs when you fail to transfer your weight from the front foot to the back foot–also produces a Reverse C finish configuration.

To correct this fault, you need more hip rotation and less slide. To cure the reverse pivot, you need more weight transfer. If your problem is the reverse pivot, try making your ordinary swing while lifting your front foot of the ground on your back swing, then replant it on the downswing. This helps transfer the weight from the front foot to the back foot, as it should. If you want to build more hip rotation in the swing, try taking practice swings with a shaft placed on right side of your hips. Your hips should rotate so that they never touch the shafts. If they touch, you slid.

The reverse C finish is one of the more prominent finishes. But like the lunge, low, or high finishes, it can indicate hidden swing faults that need correcting. The sooner you start working on correcting the swing faults discussed here, the sooner you’ll start lowering your golf handicap.

If you play any amount of golf you have noticed that some golf courses have driving ranges and others do not. From my experience a golf course would not have a driving range because of the area. By that I mean the course is located in a city that doesn’t have enough real estate to be able to provide to its players. While other golf courses never had it included in their plans when designing it.So what is the driving range most useful for? Some would say it’s place to get yourself loose before you head out to the first tee. Others will say its a place to hone in your skills that you can take from the driving range to the golf course. However, most of us who are avid golfers know this is easier said than done. I have experienced a really bad warm up session on the driving range where I couldn’t hit anything where I was looking, and then had a great ball striking round. While other warm up sessions I struck the ball wonderfully but failed to carry that over to my round.Such is the normal ups and downs golfers of all levels will experience. If you watch golf you may have noticed the announcers will watch some of the players warm up before they begin their round. They often make comments on how they looked warming up on the range and how well they were able to hit control shots of all types. This rule pertains to the best players in the world as well. Tiger Woods for example, has been known to have an awful warm up, and then went to the golf course and played “beautifully”, as he likes to put it.So if you are confused on why you may hit the ball great during your warm up before you play, and then fail to be able to carry that over to the golf course – know that you are in company of not only most golfers but some of the best players in the world as well.So what can we do about it? Well golf is like a lot of others sports in that we need to actually practice like we play. Take Basketball for an example. Coaches will simulate “real game” situations everyday during practice to make it seem as much like the real thing as possible. Football coaches do this as well putting as much pressure on the players as possible helping prepare the guys for real game situations.So the next time you find yourself on the driving range hitting 95% of your shots with your driver ask yourself if this is actually benefiting your playing potential. I can answer that for you and say with an affirmative NO. If you could spend 10 minutes or so and picture the first few holes in your mind, and actually hit some of the shots you might experience on those holes, it could help your performance on the golf course.We all know how important it is to get off to a good start and for those who are not as experienced as professionals probably aren’t mentally tough enough to handle a shaky start. Nick Faldo used to play the first nine holes on the driving range before he played some of his tournaments. What does this do for you? It will help expand your imagination and feel, which are vital to be a good player.Anyway hope this little tid bit helped. Take this advice seriously experimenting on your own, and little by little you should start seeing some improvements in your game.

MEASURING UP. The golf clubs of today are far different from what they were some 30 years ago. The transition from wooden shafts to steel shafts, and improved club design, which have given clubs better balance and feel, are among the major reasons for the improved play of all golfers, particularly the professionals.Factory-made clubs are now fairly standardized and are designed to fit almost every golfer. Unless you are extremely tall or short, a factory set should suit your needs, for clubs don’t vary too much from standard specifications. In any case, don’t purchase a new set of clubs haphazardly.

Golf Club Shaft Flexibility and Swing Weight

The speed of your swing will determine the flexibility of your shaft and the swing weight of the club head.If you are rather strong, the shaft should be on the stiff side with the swing weight a little heavier than medium. Conversely, if you are not so strong, it would be best to use a more flexible shaft with a lighter swing weight. Shafts come in several different flexes and different weights.Generally, the dividing point for swing weight is D-3. Anything under that is getting on the light side, and anything over D-3 becomes correspondingly heavier as the number increases. In other words, a driver that has a swing weight of D-7 would be too heavy for the average golfer. It would be better for him to use a medium-stiff shaft with a swing weight between DO and D-4.

Women’s clubs are usually swing-weighted from C-5 to D-0. The shafts in their clubs are more flexible than men’s, and they are also lighter. The medium swing weight for them would be C-7 to C-8.

LENGTH AND LIE OF GOLF CLUBS

Golf clubs are usually made up in three different lies: flat, medium, and upright. The standard-length driver is 43 inches, and the two-iron, the longest iron club, is 382 inches long. The length and lie of clubs are determined by the distance the hands are from the ground. This hands-to-ground measurement will usually not vary more than 2 or 3 inches from a tall to a short person. Thus, it is not uncommon to have a golfer of medium height using the same length and lie as a taller player because their hands-to-ground measurements are the same.Generally speaking, the great majority of golfers can use standard-length clubs with a medium lie. If you are a rather short or tall person, you may require a special set. Here again, it would be wise to consult an experienced professional. You will find it to be time well spent in the long run.

Just take the time to learn from the basics up, in your own time, and move ahead only as you gain confidence and ability rather than try and “push it” all too soon, as sometimes ” the faster you try and go the further you fall behind”As you would expect this book really does cover all bases from The Drive, through approach shots, pitching, chipping and putting and the whole emotional/mental approach.

Possibly a video would have been helpful with the online version, but I do note that videos are available as an addition if required.I feel the book is suited to serious golfers who are determined to work on their game and get that handicap lower and are willing to work at it, because it definitely does work for those willing to apply the effort.

This golf book is extremely good value and just one tip put to good use, will pay for the book, when you consider the price is only about the cost of one golf lesson and you have the book to keep, to refer back to, at any stage.

In summary, the trick is to be a coach to yourself and not a critic, as it is a game of confidence and composure. This book gives you all the necessary golf tips and tricks, to be able to coach yourself beyond just the technical aspects of the game and equally allows you to build confidence.
